Green Car News: Auto genius Henry Ford made a HEMP CAR back in the 1940s
Henry Ford was a pioneer, that indisputable statement is certain. Did you know that when he was experimenting with the use of space age materials to help create his automobiles, he experimented with the use of Marijuana? In production of his plastic car models, that is... read on to get the full story about the daring design concept that could have made the Ford Motor Corporation the 21st century front runner of sustainable, eco-friendly industry had they not had their plans thwarted by the United States government.

CELEBRITY SCANDAL OR SMART BUSINESS IDEA: HEMP CARS IDEA BELONGS TO FORD
Ford was not involved in any kind of celebrity scandal; he was simply reinforcing his plastics with the ultra strong use of cellulose derived from hemp materials. His dream -- to produce bio-degradable car parts -- included a strategy to utilize hemp (a sustainable

HEMP CAR: SMART, FABULOUS FORD IDEA GONE UP IN SMOKE DUE TO POLITICS OF THE TIMES
Hemp, a product created by processing the grown stalks of marijuana plants, has historically been used to create durable forms of thread, cord, fabric, and rope. By infusing hemp strands into plastic auto parts, Ford was using his head.
However, since the product has been shunned since the early 1900s due to the "Reefer Madness" scare and made illegal to grow independently as a farm product after the depression, it has not been a truely viable business staple to use for materials manufacturing.

I'd like to see more hemp related corporate tactics. Regardless of it's taboo/illegal status, hemp can really help our economy out if we just harness the energy and use it responsibly. Excellent article!
Ford made a hem-based car far earlier than this...and he did it with hemp fibers and oils he grew in his own fields and processed himself. If hemp weren't made illegal, he'd have used it for so much of his vehicles that Ford's profits would have absolutely skyrocketed, since he would have then not just been producing transporation that everyone needed, but he'd have been growing the raw materials he needed to build them inexpensively, as well as the raw materials he'd have used for fuelling them...and profiting at each step!
My understanding is that Ford's plant-based plastics were based primarily on soybeans (as used in his 1940 Plastic Car). But it was a mix of materials, so apparently hemp figured in as well.
So why don't we use hemp now? Why does the government ban us from growing hemp? It will save our forests and natural resources. We can make inexpensive fuel from it. We can use it to make durable clothing. We can use it for food. We can use it for medicine. LEGALIZE IT NOW! For a list of hundreds of uses for hemp visit Jack Herer's web page at: www.jackherer.com
