It has been a very humbling experience researching and getting to know Nell Minow these past few days. In true “Renaissance Woman” fashion, Nell juggles two very demanding, and different, careers. She is a well-known movie critic and corporate analyst.
Nell has been a fan of the movies ever since she saw her first one. This passion was fueled when she spent a large portion of the summer after her sophomore year of high school at home battling illness. This meant it was movie marathon time, and she says, “I watched a zillion movies.”
To go along with her love of film, she began writing movie reviews for her high school newspaper. That was all it took to turn a movie nut into a movie critic. She has been writing reviews ever since, and now has more than 40 years of experience. She has also written a book entitled “The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies.” Those who have read her work say that her passion and experience shine through in everything she writes.
1995 brought a lot of things to this world: Pixar came out with their first film Toy Story, DVDs were finally ready to start the VHS phase out, Yahoo! and eBay were founded, Forrest Gump won Best Picture, the glove didn’t fit O.J., Cal Ripken Jr. broke the "Iron Man" streak of consecutive baseball games played, and…
Movie Mom hit the web.
Nell Minow saw a void. Too many times she ran into puzzled moms at the video store wondering if a movie was acceptable for their child to watch. She knew that the MPAA system was just not detailed enough, especially when it came to PG-13 and R rated films. Nell says, “PG-13 has the widest range, from mild to very raunchy.” So, like many people did in 1995, she decided to let her voice be heard “across the web,” and started up her own site for her reviews. Movie Mom was born. Eventually, Yahoo! picked up her column and now her page has found a home at Beliefnet.
But, it was a labor of love because as Nell says, “I wrote more than 500 reviews before I got paid for it.”
Nell also has a background as a lawyer and “no-nonsense” corporate analyst, once being dubbed the “CEO killer.” During her college years and her subsequent jobs, she never stopped loving movies and writing her reviews. Now she says she splits her time pretty equally between her two jobs. The Washington Post recently did an article entitled “MovieMom’s Double Life,” describing both jobs and how she manages to succeed in both.
Still, the Washington Post article was not enough information to satisfy my curiosity about this woman who reminded me so much of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Bruce Wayne is a corporate tycoon by day, and masked vigilante “taking out the trash” by night. On the other hand, Nell Minow and Movie Mom “take on corporations” by day, and “take out the cinematic trash” by night.
So, I went straight to the source and reached out to Nell. She not only agreed to do an interview, but also responded to my questions almost immediately, and very enthusiastically. So, please check out this fantastic interview with Nell Minow, aka Movie Mom.
Also, make sure you check out her page here: Movie Mom. You can even subscribe and get notified when she posts new articles, the same way you can here at Examiner.
