Ovechkin versus Crosby.

Many have called the series between the Washington Capitals and the Pitsburg Pengins the best series in the playoffs. After all, you have the two players who most consider to be the best 2 players in the league facing off against each other: Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin. Or if you want to buy into the media hype, Ovechkin and Crosby.

Either way, you have a lot of talent on the ice, and players who are in the prime of their careers who don’t have any love for each other. The formula creates a very intriguing matchup.

Thus far, the series has lived up to the hype. The Capitals took the first two games, and the Penguins took the next three. Last night, the Capitals tied the series, forcing a game seven. Meanwhile, two hat tricks were scored in a single game, and three games were decided in overtime. Ovechkin leads the series in goals and points, and Crosby narrowly trails him.

So where does that leave us? Game seven for tomorrow night. If you’re like me and can’t wait to see what the result will be, NHL 09 can give us a preview of what might be. Lineups were taken from the CBS Sportsline page depth charts (here for the Capitals, and here for the Penguins) for the most authentic simulation possible. Periods are set to 20 minutes. The computer will be facing off against the computer, and the game will be played in the Nation’s capital. Without any further ado, here is what NHL 09 predicts game seven will be in this closely contested series.

Period 1

  • Ovechkin scores at 17:22 left on the clock. Assist by Mike Greene.
  • Malkin ties the game with 3:02 left in the period. Assist by Orpik, Kunitz.

Period 2

  • Semin scores with 15:32 on the clock. Assist by Federov.
  • Federov scores with 14:54 on the clock. Assist by Semin, Laich.
  • Ovechkin scores with 2:22 on the clock. Assist by Varlamov, Greene.

Period 3

  • Letang scores with 4:12 on the clock. Assist by Malkin, Fleury.

Final Score
Washington: 4
Pittsburg: 2
