San Franciscans have a love/hate affair with the 4th of July. Oh how we love to celebrate barbeque, family and friends, the languid days of summer, lounging in Dolores Park with Bi Rite honey lavender ice cream, and a six pack, just waiting for the fireworks to explode. Yet, most years we are plagued with dense fog and chilly winds that make the holiday downright miserable. Most years, we wait to see what the weather is like before getting in the car and heading to warmer pastures. So if you are like me and looking for some summer on the first weekend of July, here are a few last minute ideas.
Mendocino County: Our crunchy neighbors to the north understand that 4th of July isn't just about fireworks (though there are no shortage of them--they start the fun on Friday night!). If you are looking for some good ole American fun, you can't miss Willits' Frontier Days rodeo and BBQ. If cowboys aren't your game, head to Fort Bragg for the world's largest Salmon Barbeque--for a mere twenty five bucks, you can eat in style--albeit not local salmon, the recipe is perfected and unlimited.
Sierra Foothills: Grass Valley and Nevada City both host Fourth of July events that capture the small town heart of Gold Country. The Grass Valley parade starts at 11am, but the party doesn't end there. After the hoopla, head to the fairgrounds, where fireworks begin at 9:30.
Sacramento: Last year, I spent the 4th in the state capitol and had a blast. The heat, the fireworks that explode over the city and dining alfresco all feel like the perfect way to celebrate Independence Day.
Sonoma County: Just an hour north of San Francisco, you'll find heat and more fireworks shows than you need. If you want to celebrate early, Friday night fireworks kick off the weekend in Sebastopol, Monte Rio, Windsor and Bodega Bay. If you prefer to view a light show on the actual holiday, then Sonoma town, Guerneville, Petaluma and Cloverdale are where it is at.
