Yesterday at George Washington University, students began lining up outside the Jack Morton Auditorium at 4pm to get a spot inside once the 7pm show began. The show was THE PEOPLE SPEAK College Tour, a national campus tour for the forthcoming documentary film THE PEOPLE SPEAK, executive produced by Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, Chris Moore, Anthony Arnove, and Howard Zinn. THE PEOPLE SPEAK airs Dec. 13 on the History Channel. The headling celebrity the students wanted to see was the hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco who is featured in the film and traveling with Chris Moore to promote it.

"I am here to see Lupe," said GWU freshman, AJ, 18. "Oh, and I love the History channel, too."

AJ and his friend Anita, were two of at least fifteen students who had begun lining up outside of the auditorium to see the hip-hop artist who many refer to as part of the "new hip-hop" which is political, intelligent and still mainstream. By 6:45pm, before the doors opened for the show, the line had extended pass the elevators in the GWU media building, forming three snakes before heading out of the doors. The auditorium was packed with over 200 students seconds before the show started.

Become an Activist

Lupe Fiasco and Chris Moore entertained a press conference prior to the college tour presentation for "The People Speak". During the press conference, Fiasco told reporters that after their presentation today, they want students to "become activists." \

THE PEOPLE SPEAK college tour provides students a live experience of powerful passages, speeches, and lyrics of individuals from throughout American history whose words reflect how important progress in our country happens from the ground up. During last night's presentation, Fiasco read live a speech by Muhummad Ali when he objected participation in the Vietnam war. During a clip of the movie that was shown, Fiasco read a speech during the Civil Rights movement. Read more about what happened HERE.

The documentary THE PEOPLE SPEAK features celebrities Marisa Tomei, Don Cheadle, Kerry Washington, John Legend, Bruce Sprinsteen, Viggo Mortenson, Matt Damon and others. The film is inspired by and based on co-executive producer Howard Zinn's books A People's History of the United States, which has sold more than a million copies, and with co-executive producer Anthony Arnove, Voices of a People of the United States.
