Not everyone wants to talk about planning their wedding for 12 months and not everyone wants all the unsolicited opinions and interference of family and friends in the planning process. Some couples have minimized wedding planning drama by choosing to have a Surprise Wedding.
“I think too often it is the Bride planning the wedding with everyone else except the groom! With planning a surprise wedding, all of that was eliminated. When Bob and I decided to have a surprise wedding, we planned everything as a duet. I actually think it made us closer,” said Lisa Oliver of Anaheim, California. Lisa and Bob invited everyone to Lisa’s 30th Birthday Party (wink, wink) and when people said they weren’t coming, they made it fairly impossible for people not to attend. “We told one person we wanted him to act as Emcee of the Birthday party and told my dad that we wanted him to organize Karaoke for the event. Without these guys having 'jobs', they probably would have figured a way not to attend. We sent a limo for our close family members, using the excuse that we wanted them to be able to drink, so didn’t want them to drive. Insuring that everyone would be there was the most difficult planning aspect but it was all worth it to see everyone’s shocked expressions when they entered the banquet room and saw that it was set up for a wedding and not a birthday!"
“We had all the trimmings of a traditional wedding except we didn’t spend money on attendants’ flowers or gifts, expensive invitations or a rehearsal dinner. I didn’t have to decide which of my 10 female cousins I’d have to eliminate if I had done the traditional bridesmaids' thing. Everyone loved that we had our parents stand up for us in lieu of a traditional wedding party. There were no hurt feelings or after-wedding fences to mend!” Bob nodded in total agreement, “I wouldn’t change a thing about our surprise wedding. And the big extra plus for me is I will never forget Lisa’s Birthday or Wedding Anniversary this way! It’s just too great of a day to forget.”
