Obama arriving in Asia
Obama arriving in Asia
AP

Everywhere Obama traveled during the thousands miles covered by him and his entourage across Asia, the U.S. President was rebuffed by the leaders of every country he visited.  The trip resulted in no palatable results. They smiled nicely at him and then showed him their backs.

The limits of Obama and his new foreign policy of demeaning the United States doesn't seem to be working.  He is not getting the kind of respect that his handlers expected. The results were:

  • Japan's new center-left government pulled out of its participation in a mission which saw the Japanese navy refueling in the Indian Ocean as part of of the Afghanistan campaign. In fact there were no concessions of any kind.
  • China made no commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Reevaluation of the Chinese currency has been postponed. Its agreement about Iran sanctions did not move forward. And nothing was accomplished about nuclear disarmament Even the human rights issue fell by the wayside. Instead China demanded that America should clean up its government finances and that the weak dollar is unacceptable.

Obama Looking Like Jimmy Carter to World Leaders

While world leaders did not especially like George W. Bush, but they have less respect for Barack Obama in the same way that Jimmy Carter was held.  Carter showed weakness in a world that was getting tougher and tougher and the predators, and anti-Americans dictators started becoming more aggressive.

Is the time coming when GWB's tough stand on foreign policy begins to look a little better as Obama completes his first year in office?  Or will he began to behave like a leader instead of an apologizer and gain the respect of world leaders who might fear him rather than give him their smiles and nothing else in return for his proffered hand?
