This week, instead of beginning the show with the girls in the limo, we see them after they arrive home from last week's panel, and Rae comes in the room with a large envelope, claiming she has a letter. She says that it's the hardest thing she's ever done, to be separated from her daughter Aria. She says that she needs to put herself out there and stand out. Nicole looks at her winning digital art photo in the house, saying she thinks her butt looks massive. Erin takes the time to complain that Nicole can take a great photo, but her personality isn't something that a lot of people can relate to. She says Nicole is socially inept, but that she has the personality that most girls can relate to.
It's time for the first Tyra-mail!
"You think you know this competition inside and out? We'll see. -- Love, Tyra"
After reading the Tyra-mail, Laura admits that she is dyslexic. She says that black type on white paper looks like it's moving to her, and when she was growing up her teachers said that she was stupid.
The girls pile in the limo and head off to the first challenge. They arrive at CBS studios, and enter the building to find Lara Spencer, the host of The Insider and Ant are sitting in chairs chatting. Lara is interviewing Celebrity Fit Club's Ant, asking him if he's working on a pilot for a talk show. He says he doesn't want to talk about that because it will jinx it. She then asks him about a movie she thought he was in, but he corrects her, saying it she was thinking of another actor, and is truly peeved. They were just showing the girls what can happen when interviews go wrong. Lara says that you just have to move on. She says Tyra is amazing at thinking on her feet, and that they will be teaching the girls techniques of interviewing, should they become a correspondent.
Cut to Nicole, who is worried about this challenge, saying that one-on-one conversations are not her forté.
Lara says they will do a mock interview, with Ant being the actor in a film called "Attack of the 5 ft. models," and they will have to interview him.
Lara asks if they are ready for the real thing now, and they all say yes. They head over to the set of The Insider, where Lara introduces editor-in-chief at Seventeen Magazine, Ann Shoket. Ann comes out and says she heard they learned something about interviewing celebrities. She says that will come in handy, as they will be interviewing Jessica Lowndes from 90210. She says they'll each have 2 minutes, and will be reading from the teleprompter. Laura is worried about having to read because of her dyslexia. Ann tells them that the winner will be in a beauty story in Seventeen Magazine.
Sundai - She asks her about being Canadian, and Jessica says she is from Vancouver. Sundai says that it's great how she adapted. Then, her prompter goes blank, and Sundai gets a weird look on her face, and is confused for a few seconds, but then recovers, asking if Jessica if she has to come back and forth between Canada and Beverly Hills. She asks her about finishing school, and we see Ann mentioning that Sundai is interrupting a bit. After they're done, Ann gives them feedback. She admonishes Nicole for asking inappropriate questions. She tells Erin that she felt she was in control of her interview. When critiquing Rae, they say that they can't really remember what she did, and said that being memorable is really important. They thought Jennifer was unflappable, and owned it. They told Laura that she forgot what they said how you have to keep going. She had a huge pause, and then there was the curse. Yikes.
The winner is Erin. She'll be in the Seventeen photo shoot, and she gets to pick two friends to join her. She chooses Jennifer and Rae.
We get to see the photoshoot with Erin, Jennifer and Rae next. They'll be in the December/January issue. All three girls took great shots.
Back at the model home, the girls are all hanging out when all of a sudden the doorbell rings. There are boxes with bows on them sitting outside the door. There is a letter, and it tells them tomorrow they'll be filming their first CoverGirl commercial. There are kits to assist the girls as they'll be writing their own scripts. Their commercials must be 25 seconds long and end with a specific line. Laura is again worried, as dyslexic people have a problem with memorizing things. Erin is done first, and she heads off to bed. Nicole is one of the last to get through. She is having a hard time memorizing the script, and says she "can't" go home, no way.
The next day the girls head off to their CoverGirl shoot where Mr. Jay is waiting for them, along with Teyona, winner of Cycle 12. Mr. Jay takes the scripts and says that he's going to be pulling them out one by one to go over them. He won't be out on the set directing them. In walks Nigel Barker, who WILL be on the set with them.
The girls head to hair and makeup, and Jay pulls aside Nicole, and asks her how she sees herself as a CoverGirl. She says she always thought of herself as sort of dorky and ackward. He says he likes that. Nicole says that the commercial is really important, as it's not just about having a pretty face. You have to have the kind of personality they are looking for.
In her commercial, Nicole has some problems at first, but Nigel reminds her what she is saying about letting her eyes doing the talking and reminds her to "smize." After that Nicole has it down and delivers a great commercial.
Sundai is next, and Nigel has to correct the way she said her wording. He mentioned that he was disappointed, and thought it was amateur.
Jennifer is next, and her commercial comes off great as well.
Jay sits down with Laura, asking her who she would feel the most comfortable talking to. She says that would be her little sister. Next, she tells Nigel her story, and He likes her style of method acting. When she tapes her commercial, she has a hard time remembering the lines. When she's done, Nigel comments that she did an awful job remembering her lines, but a great job bringing her personality to the shoot.
Brittany does her commercial next. She knows her lines really well, but Nigel says it's like listening to a robot recite them.
Jay talks to Rae, saying the commercial is paramount for her, and she needs to come across as Rae. He tells her to just be herself. When she does her commercial, Nigel is disappointed, saying she's not showing her personality.
Erin is next, and she starts her commercial and flubs her lines repeatedly, and gets frustrated. Nigel tries to help her, but she doesn't listen, and has a horrible commercial.
Erin reads the message as the girls watch. Rae and Jennifer are oddly enough brushing their teeth.
"Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only six of you will continue on in the hopes of becoming America's Next Top Model."
As the girls are getting ready to head off to panel, Laura talks about how hard she tried to do the commercial. She's worried she may be the one going home.
Tyra welcomes the girls and talks about the prizes. She introduces the judges, Nigel Barker, Miss J, and special guest judge Kim Kardashian.
The judges deliberate for a bit, and when they've got their answer, the girls come back. The callouts are as follows:
The bottom two are Rae and Erin. They think Rae didn't show her personality, and Erin can take great photos, but she can't deliver a commercial. So, who is going home? It's Minnesota's own Rae. While I'm sad to see her go, she really wasn't improving each week.
Next week, the Top Model house is quarantened. Tyra takes over and says they can't live there anymore. Of course, that can only mean it's time for the models to hit go on the road.
