Beatle fans pick McCartney weekend in Vegas to tie the knot
Brenda Spencer and Steven Cornwell are getting married in Las Vegas.
Well, so do a lot of couples.
The difference is Brenda and Steve are getting married on April 18, one day before Paul McCartney's concert at the New Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
For these two huge Beatle fans, the timing couldn't have been better.
Brenda says she and Steve met at work. They're employed by a major health insurance company. "When he wore a Beatles shirt one day, I took notice!," she told us in an email.
Of course, on dates, they started attending Paul McCartney shows together.
Marriage became a topic of discussion. "We had been talking about getting married for awhile. And I told him that if we got lucky enough to get tix to see Paul, we could get married there (in Las Vegas), too."
Steve proposed during a trip to Hawaii in January.
"We hadn't set a date yet but I knew I wanted something unique. When we heard about Paul coming to Vegas, I told Steve if we were lucky enough to get tickets, we should get married there. Well, we got VIP tickets. Then he got the Sgt Pepper John Lennon costume and got down on one knee, with the ring and proposed. So of course I said yes," she says.
Love, love, love, as the song says. And, of course, the wedding will include the Beatles.
"Before we planned the wedding, I did a lot of emailing trying to find the best place for a Beatles themed wedding. Viva Las Vegas is going to recreate 'The Ed Sullivan Show' with John and Paul impersonators. They will be in the early Beatles suits. They will sing before the wedding and after to get us up and dancing in the aisles."
But that's not all.
"Steve ... will be wearing a green Sgt Pepper costume, Ben, my daughter's boyfriend will be in the blue one. Masahiro is flying in from Japan and will be in the George one. And "Ringo" will be walking me down the aisle."
And the Beatle theme will extend beyond the wedding party, Brenda says.
"My daughter will be in a yellow mini dress and white go go boots with a Beatles necklace. My niece will be in orange with a Beatles necklace.
Even the guests are getting into the act.
"Guests will be characters from Beatles songs," she says. "So far we have a Walrus, a Polythene Pam, Mr Kite, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, some in Beatle suits. Others said they might dress up as Beatle wives. ... And some won't tell me." But, she adds, "I can't get anyone to be a one-legged golddigger, though."
I have a friend making buttons for the Beatles Vegas wedding and another friend making t-shirts saying, 'Paul rocked the joint' on the front and 'Brenda and Steve got married' on the back.
It'll be a big Beatle day. Oh, and, of course, Paul's been invited, too.
"The wedding will be at 5 p.m. Pacific Time on the 18th, followed by a reception and then we all head to the Mirage for photos and the 9:30 LOVE show!," she told us.
Living proof love is all you need.
