Earlier this week several local vendors put on quite the underwater reception at the National Aquarium in Washington, DC. Tucked away on the lower level of the Department of Commerce Building on 14th street, the Aquarium is home to over 1,500 specimens. Thanks to a grant by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in 2004, the space has undergone a much needed renovation and is now hoping to offer its services as your next event venue. Rentals of the space are coordinated by Event Emissary, the local event company that also manages the Mellon Auditorium.

Wednesday’s Going Green in the Deep Blue Sea Event was hosted in partnership with Federal City Caterers, who seized the opportunity to highlight their green initiative. The buffet featured locally grown produce and guests were told that recycling and composting for the event were taking place on-site. Attendees enjoyed a slider station with a choice of beef and veggie burgers accompanied by all the fixings. Another buffet included free range chicken skewers, sweet potato fritters, and mac and cheese sprinkled with bacon. The signature cocktail for the evening, “Deep Blue” mixed organic crop vodka and blueberry juice.

Guests weren’t the only ones enjoying a wonderful meal. The Aquarium’s resident alligators got a feeding of their own during the event as one of the staff slipped into the exhibit to provide them with a late snack of frozen mice. Now that’s something you don’t see at other receptions around DC!

Other participating vendors included; Party Rental Ltd. , John Farr Lighting Design, and All Stage and Sound.
