A powerful winter storm system brought blizzard conditions for all of western and parts of southern Minnesota.
Almost every major road in southwest Minnesota is closed down by the DOT. See the graphic to the right to see all the closed roads and click http://hb.511mn.org/main.jsf for details on all the current roads that are closed.
Conditions are so bad that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty activated the MN National Guard on Monday afternoon to help counties in southern and west-central Minnesota with providing shelter and other services.
The National Guard Armories in Olivia, Marshall, and St. James have been opened for stranded travelers.
MNDOT said they were pulling snowplows off roads and warned the roads were or would soon become impassable due to blowing snow.
Many of the schools around the area were also closing early but not sending the kids home until the parents came to pick them up due to the roads being too dangerous for school buses to travel on.

The video below shows a classic blizzard that transitions into a ground blizzard where the snow is blowing with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour at times but the clouds are gone and the sun was out but obscured by the blowing snow.
