Today, developer NinjaBee announced a free update for the game Band of Bugs, a title released 2 years ago. From the press release:
"The added Avatar support will allow gamers the option of replacing the original story’s hero, Maal, with their custom Avatar as they play through the main story mode. Players will also be able to engage in hand-to-hand combat and spell casting in eight-player Spider Hunter mode. Spider Hunter, one of several multiplayer modes, allows players to battle with or against their friends over Xbox LIVE to survive an onslaught of deadly spiders, mosquitoes, centipedes and more."
First, let me take a second to applaud NinjaBee for taking the time out to go back to a game that obviously had no need for an update, and give a little something extra for both newcomers and those who already own. Second, helping Mike Borland with that free game "Dash of Destruction," which I still have yet to delete that off my hard drive, it is just plain fun (now just add multiplayer support as $2 DLC).
What can other developers learn from this? How to keep gamers happy. I understand not every game can have added Live Vision Camera support (I have seen enough testicles playing UNO), but something like avatars support should be done without saying on most newer games. It doesn't hurt to be able to put one more line on your list of features.
With older games though, it comes down to .. "Why not?" Just looking at the XBLA games I own, I could easily see 3D Ultra Minigolf and Bomberman LIVE making use of this feature, as well as renew interest in those titles. I have no doubts Hudson would enjoy seeing Bomberman LIVE make it's way back onto the Live Activity charts.
Make sure when a company does work like this, show support, pop the titles back in and tell message the people on your friends list to do the same. Thanks again NinjaBee, you keep proving you are one of the "cooler" developers out there.
