1995 an epic year for gaming.
We all like to look back and marvel at the changes in the gaming lifestyle and industry evolution over the years. As part of my throwback series I feel it is my duty to start with 1995. This year was no joke for technology in general. Ebay.com was launched, The DVD format was announced, and Yahoo! was founded. What games were released in the same year as Gangsta's Paradise? What were you playing when you were not busy being amazed by Toy Story?
August 22 1995:
Square Company, Ltd. (now know as Square Enix) Releases Chrono Trigger for SNES. Chrono Trigger was the third best-selling game of 1995
November 24 1995:
A small company by the name of Bungie Software Products Corporation releases Marathon 2.
November 11 1995:
Mindscape releases Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat. It's the first ever real-time tactics game, and the first fully three dimensional real-time strategy/wargame.
April 30 1995:
ID Software releases The Ultimate Doom. It adds a fourth installment of 9 levels to the series.
August 31 1995:
Westwood Studios releases Command & Conquer, based on their earlier game dune 2. It becomes one of the first ever popular RTS game franchises.
December 9 1995:
Formerly knowns as Silicon & Synapse and briefly Chaos Studios, Blizzard Entertainment releases Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.
September 9 1995:
Sony releases a console known as PlayStation in the United States. Later that month on the 29th it is released in Europe.
February 1995:
After waiting over 3 years for the English translation, Americans get to play Phantasy Star IV. Later released in Europe on December 8th.
February 1995:
Augustine Yip, Greg Zeschuk, and Ray Muzyka found BioWare. It goes on to make titles such as Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Neverwinter Nights.
May 11 1995:
The First annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is held in Los Angeles. It goes on to be arguably the best gaming expo in America.
Rumored Mid 1995:
Michael Abrash leaves Microsoft to work on Quake at id Software. His leaving inspires Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington to leave Microsoft as well. Gabe and Mike go on to form Valve Corporation, later releasing an onslaught of best sellers including Half-Life, Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, and Portal.
This was indeed a gem of a year for any gamer.
