The Animal Rescue League of Boston, located at 10 Chandler St. in Boston's South End, is one of 46 animal shelters nationwide (and the only New England shelter) competing for a $100,000 prize from the ASPCA. To win, the shelters must adopt out 300 more animals between August and October than they did last year. The Animal Rescue League's goal is to get 1,220 animals adopted during this period, which is a particularly tough goal given the current economy.
Adoption Fee for adult cats reduced
As part of their efforts to meet the ASPCA challenge, the Animal Rescue League has reduced the adoption fee for adult cats (those over 1 year of age) to $50. For this sum, you get a cat that has been spayed or neutered and has all of the necessary shots. If you consider the fact that area vets charge up to $300 just to spay or neuter a cat, you'll realize that this is a major bargain. As of September 3, 2010, the League had 31 adult cats available for adoption.
Senior discount
People over 60 years of age are eligible for a Seniors for Seniors discount of up to 50 percent off the regular adoption fee for any adult cat or dog. The Boston adoption center had seven adult dogs and 31 adult cats available for adoption, as of September 3, 2010.
Adoption hours
The adoption center at the Animal Rescue League is open from 1 pm to 7 pm Tuesday through Thursday and from 1 pm to 4 pm Friday through Sunday. The League's website address is www.arlboston.org
