Alphabet activities: ABC nature walk

Learning is more fun outdoors. Author's photo.

Autumn is the perfect time for a nature hike. From berries and acorns to leaves and blooms, there are treasures waiting to be discovered behind every tree. Grab a basket for your goodies and head outdoors for an ABC nature walk. Use the ideas below to guide you and be sure to see the photo album at the bottom of the page for some examples.

Materials:

Basket or bag

Camera

Access to a park, walking trail or other outdoor area

Poster board, construction paper and glue (optional)

1. Gather your materials and head out to the nearest walking trail. As you walk, pick up any item that seems interesting. Look for moss, acorns, leaves, rocks, flowers, grasses, sticks, berries and bark.

2. Once your bag is filled with interesting objects, it is time to begin building your alphabet.

3. Make the shape of each letter on the ground and snap a picture of it when you are finished. Optionally, you can use glue to mount your letters on a poster board or on individual sheets of construction paper.

4. Print your pictures to make your own ABC nature book.
