Dogs die in record-breaking heat

Omaha, NE - The massive heat-wave stretching across portions of the Midwest are taking a toll on dogs who have been left outdoors.

According to the Chicago Tribune, two Omaha area dogs perished within the past week.

One dog, an Alaskan Malamute, was left outside without water or shade - that dog died from heat-related issues on Monday when temperatures hovered near the century mark.

Another dog, an American Bulldog, died after similar circumstances left him unable to survive the scorching conditions last Friday.

These tragic deaths are a painful reminder - do not leave your dogs outside without water and sufficient shade.

It is best to bring your dogs inside with you.

Watch for the warning signs of heat exhaustion/heat stroke:

  • Excessive panting/heavy or difficult breathing
  • Weakness, stupor, potentially - collapse
  • Excessive drooling
  • critical symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, possibly bloody diarrhea

Please keep an eye out for neighborhood pets who may be suffering outside without proper shelter.

Contact the authorities if you are concerned about the welfare of a pet who has been left outdoors without adequate shelter from the heat.
