Newark, NJ - Almost a year from the time that Patrick, a formerly abused and neglected Pit bull, was found near death in a trash chute, the battle for permanent custody drags on.
On Friday, an attorney for Associated Humane Societies (AHS) filed a petition to obtain custody of Patrick.
The organization maintains that the city should have turned Patrick over to AHS from the start.
For months, Patrick has been flourishing under the loving care of his current guardian, Patricia Smillie-Scavelli, administrator of the Garden State Veterinary Specialists (GSVS).
GSVS is the hospital which nursed Patrick back from the very brink of death.
A judge denied Associated Humane Societies last year when they attempted to take Patrick away from the individual who has been caring for him throughout his long-road to recovery.
Even today, both sides accuse the other of wanting custody of Patrick merely for the sake of profit.
It is rather ironic that there is a battle for custody of Patrick when there are countless other Pit bulls either being killed at over-crowded animal control facilities or sitting in rescues without a home.
