Fabric flower necklaces are a great accessory for spring, but they can cost anywhere from $30 to $100, depending on their size and complexity.
Fortunately, these necklaces are easy to make. This particular project will allow you to make a necklace that can be worn as a choker or as a bib necklace. The supplies required cost less than one dollar. The necklace is loosely inspired by several necklaces by Anthropologie and other retailers. See the slideshow below for some examples.
Materials and tools needed are:
- A piece of grey felt at least 10 inches long and three inches wide. (Or color of your choice.)
- A piece of thin plastic about five inches long by three inches wide. (I used the lid of a plastic fresh strawberry container. Takeout containers also work well.)
- Two piece of ribbon, about nine inches long. (The Dollar Tree is a favorite resource for ribbon. )
- Miscellaneous buttons, pearls or faux gems.
- 11 to 13 fabric flowers from this tutorial.
- Scissors.
- Glue gun.
- Needle and thread (optional).
To make the necklace, first download the template for the necklace bib.
Trace this onto your felt twice and cut out.
Trace this onto the thin plastic and cut it out.
Using a glue gun, attach the ribbon to the back of the bib. Angle the ribbons upward if you plan to wear the necklace as a bib necklace and not just as a choker. To test the angle of your ribbons, you may want to pin them on first and try the necklace on. (See slideshow below for details.)
Glue the thin plastic to the back of your bib and cover with the second layer of felt.
Glue or sew buttons, pearls or other embellishments to the center of the majority of your flowers.
Bunch three of your fabric flowers together and glue to the center of the front of the bib. Add an even number of flowers to either side of this group, pushing them close together.
If the ends of your ribbon are prone to fraying, seal them by holding next to a candle flame or use a product like Fray Check.
Tie the necklace short to wear as a choker (the bib is flexible enough to fit around your neck.) Tie it longer to wear as a bib necklace.
