Proper technique and disc control are the most important parts of being good at disc golf, but don’t rule out the importance of being strong and having good endurance. If you are tired after a round or two of disc golf, you need to workout to building your strength and endurance to lower your scores and keep you focused on making the shots.
A perfect example of why you need to workout and need endurance is if you have played at Highland Hills in Bloomington Minnesota, or at any other disc golf course that is built on a ski hill, you know how tiring walking up and down the steep hills can be. You need to be in good shape or your scores will be affected because you are tired, and you can’t put all your focus on the shots. If you have played Highland you know that hole 14 is probably one of the toughest physical holes you will ever play. Strait uphill over 500 feet, just the walk is tough.
Although being strong and having endurance is important, you don’t want to look like a power lifter, you want to look more like a soccer goalie, or a sprinter. You want to be muscular with good endurance.
A big part of the power for your drives is going to come from your legs, through your core, through your chest, shoulders and to your arm. To be in good shape for disc golf, you need to have good muscles throughout your whole body.
The workout you should do for disc golf is a full body weight training workout 2 to 3 times per week, along with cardio several time per week to build up your endurance so you can play the courses with the big elevation changes without getting burned out, and also allow your arm to be able to hold up to throwing for several rounds without giving out. Here are more specifics for how to workout.
The better shape your in, the better your scores will be. Give it a try and you will see this is true. The extra strength, may also allow you to throw longer on your drives. Getting a good workout 2 or 3 times a week is good for many other things as well. Having a good woorkout program will benefit you in many parts of your life.
