A friend of the Edwards family has confirmed that Elizabeth Edwards has passed away. The estranged wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards died in North Carolina Tuesday morning.
The friend spoke on the condition of anonimity because the family had not announced her death.
CNN and WRAL are also reporting that Edwards has died, citing a family friend.
The family had issued a statement Monday that said doctors have told Edwards that further treatment for her cancer would be unproductive. She spent her last days at home in North Carolina with family and friends gathered.
John and Elizabeth Edwards have three children. Their oldest son, Wade, was killed in a car wreck in 1996.
