Things to See and Do in Santa Fe New Mexico
Going to Santa Fe? These are the top "must-do" things that every traveler to Santa Fe has on their list. Ideally you will be staying in the central historic part of Santa Fe, near the Plaza. That is the best way to get a sense of the history and culture of Santa Fe. And then, you can branch out.
The Plaza: The Plaza is the place where Santa Fe was founded and is the location of major festivals such as the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Santa Fe Spanish Market. The Plaza is the city's most historic area. You'll find museums, historic buildings, restaurants, hotels, galleries, and endless shopping. More on the Santa Fe Plaza.
Palace of the Governors: On one side of the Plaza you will find the historic Palace of the Governors, which is now part of the New Mexico History Museum. The Palace of the Governors was constructed in the
early 17th century as Spain's seat of government for what is today the American Southwest. Under the portal at the Palace of the Governors you will find Native American vendors. They are screened and provide only authentic arts and crafts. It's a fun place to shop and you will come away with authentic jewelry, pottery and weavings.Loretto Chapel and Mystical Staircase: At the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail stands the Loretto Chapel. Inside the Gothic structure is the staircase referred to as miraculous, inexplicable, marvelous and is sometimes called St. Joseph’s Staircase. More on visiting Loretto Chapel.
St. Francis Cathedral Basilica: This is the beautiful church you see as you look up toward the hills from the Plaza. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1869 and continued until 1887. The basilica's history is intertwined with the founding of Santa. Fe. More St. Francis history.
Seeing Santa Fe
This central area is full of history and culture. There are walking tours and motorized tours. But the best way to see this area is on foot. Read the plaques on the buildings, visit all the shops and talk to the locals. Santa Fe is a friendly city.
