This Saturday, Oct. 16, was proclaimed "World Erotic Art Museum Day," in the City of Miami Beach, honoring the museum that Naomi Wilzig established on South Beach five years ago.
Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Gongora read the proclamation from Mayor Matti Bower at the World Erotic Art Museum's 5th Anniversary party that night. The party was also a fundraiser for the University of Miami's Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Research Institute.
In the proclamation, Bower lauded Wilzig for establishing the collection and for finding it a "home" on South Beach.
The museum is now home to a collection of erotic art that is now valued at millions of dollars. "The fiber-optic lit cubicles display approximately 4,000 paintings, sculptures, and tapestries tracing erotic art from the early Roman Empire to the contemporary world," the mayor noted.
In the proclamation, Bower also paid homage to Wilzig, noting that the grandmother and activist began her collection simply at the behest of her son, who asked her to find a piece of erotic art as a "conversation piece" for his bachelor pad. But, because of Wilzig's "passion," she amassed a collection of fine erotic art that otherwise might have been hidden away, but is now publicly displayed, so it can be appreciated and enjoyed, the proclamation notes.
For the past 14 years, Wilzig has devoted her life to collecting such art. Her museum not only includes her priceless collection, but also houses a 250-volume erotic art library for scholarly research.
Since the museum opened in 2005, Wilzig has garnered international attention for her efforts to find, preserve and showcase erotic art, and the museum is fast becoming known as one of the top tourist attractions in the country.
