Will GOP House expose un-American activities? Part 1

It has been over 70 years since the U.S. House of Representatives began investigations into Communist infiltration of American society.  The now-infamous 'House Committee on Un-American Activites' of the 40s and 50s was implemented by Democrats who controlled the chamber.

As Republicans prepare to become the majority in the House in 2011, a question arises as to whether or not a GOP-controlled House will expose un-American activites that appear to be rampant since the resurgence of the political Left in 2006 and 2008.

U.S. Representative Darrell Issa, R-California, has notified the White House in advance that it would be prudent not to shred any documents whatsoever.  The warning suggests that Issa has already begun collecting evidence that would implicate Obama Administration officials in various corruption scandals, and that he will issue subpoenas for more evidence from the White House.

Issa will become Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in January.

Republicans have already made it clear that the practice of abdicating the responsibility for proper oversight of the government by the 111th Congress, both chambers of which have been controlled by Democrats since 2006, is entirely unacceptable.  The GOP has long decried the practice of the Democratic majority in allowing the White House and its bankrollers such as the Tides Foundation, the Center for American Progress, and SEIU to write legislation, control significant sectors of the Executive Branch, and submit bills to Congress that were automatically approved without having been read.

Issa and his colleagues in the House have indicated that such practices will be stopped cold.  Further, they have stated their intention to take back the power of governmental oversight which the Democrats abdicated and which the Constitution ascribes to Congress, not to the Executive Branch and certainly not  to murky, dubious groups with hidden agendas outside the government.

But beyond the most obvious places for Issa's investigations to focus, such as the various corruption scandals involving Administration officials, the House committee may well find itself confronted with a most disturbing set of factors not yet made public--blatant un-American activities on the part of high ranking Administration officials with deep connections to subversive groups that threaten the very foundation of the free Republic.

Part 2 will delve into a few of these dangerous connections.

    a return to McCarthyism!
AHHH! What a grand time was had by all!

  • Joe McCarthy was a Senator. He did not serve in the House. The House committee was a Democrat operation from the beginning.

and McCarthyism from the House is different than McCarthyism from the Senate?

  • The House committee wasn't 'McCarthyism' since he had absolutely nothing to do with it. Democrats at one time were very concerned about Communists in the government. Read your history. I'm not discussing this with you any further because, as usual, you nitpick and obfuscate to detract from the real issue.

  • Joe McCarthy boiled everything down to a conspiracy of evil men. We deal here with a crazy quilt of bad ideas. That's what I expect Chairman Issa to deal with.

In retrospect old Joe McCarthy wasn't too far off the mark considering that we now have socialist -Marxist czars running our country and over 70 members of the D.S.A. sitting in OUR house ! Step by step these are the people removing brick by brick the foundations of OUR freedoms !

Good point, but when commenting to a "progressive" please don't confuse them by stating facts.

  • I did an article some time ago on the fact that Joe McCarthy was right...which was proved by the documents released from the old Soviet Union when Boris Yelsin was elected. Those KGB documents showed by most of those charged by McCarthy were, indeed, working with the Communists to destroy the U.S.

Anthony, you are 100% correct. In the mid 1990's the CIA declassified the McCarthy era info and it appears he was on the Senate Intelligence Committee and had first hand information of who the spied were. He knew that we had tapped the undersea communications cable from Moscow to the Soviet Embassy in Washington. Through the tap, we learned who the spies were by name and found out that some were in the the highest levels of the Roosevelt and Truman administrations.

McCarthy could not even tell the President how we knew who the spies were because to do so would compromise the fact that we had tapped the cable. McCarthy knew by name who they were because the Soviets talked about them over their cables. Since McCarthy could not reveal how he knew they were spies, he charged them with spying through the public unAmerican activities inquiries. Of course liberals were outraged, but their exposure caused the Soviets to drop them like yesterday's news. Those identified were:

Alger Hiss at the State Department
Harry Dexter White, assistant secretary of the Treasury
International Monetary Fund by President Truman
Lauchlin Currie, personal assistant to President Roosevelt and White House liaison to the State Department under both Roosevelt and Truman
Laurence Duggan, head of the Latin American Desk at the State Department
Frank Coe, US representative on the International Monetary Fund
Solomon Adler, senior Treasury Department official
    Klaus Fuchs, top atomic scientist
Duncan Lee, senior aide to the head of the OSS.

Anyone who uses the word McCarthyism to describe a witch hunt is either ignorant of the truth, are a liar, or both.

McCarthy took his secret to the grave and it is because of his sacrifice that we gained invaluable intelligence for years. He died a lonely man because he was vilified by Hollywood and the press because he exposed them for who they really are. The left and ignorant liberals love to cry McCarthyism because they are mad that their communist colors are recognized for what they are.

A side note to this is Ronald Reagan knew a lot about this while he worked as head of the actors union, which helped him to solidify his conservative opinions. He knew personally who were communists.

Great stuff Anthony! There's a book out about McCarthy that vindicates him although I don't recall the name. I would love to see this administration go down in flames and so,I might add,do my progressive friends.

Walrus, McCarthy is not my hero but I do think if he was found to be right history should show it. I suppose people like William Ayers are your type of hero. Your president seems to think a lot of these types as well as other terrorist sympathizers.

What exactly is an un-American activity? Who decides what is American and what is not?

The Patriot act was un-American, but some people think it protects our rights.

If I read certain books that don't agree with Capitalism in its current form, is that un-American? (or a subversive commie, oh no - independent thought!)

Certainly the Federal reserve is an un-American institution, as they suck the life blood out of every working class citizen. Perhaps we should form a group to investigate them? But i am sure some jack hole will call that un-American.
