In order to fully comprehend the mindset, the mission, and the end-game of Barack Obama's policy initiatives, one must understand something about his background. And his background continues to be a source of many questions, this time centering on his years as a student at Columbia University.
If, as Obama claims, he received a degree from Columbia, then was his presence on campus a case of 'the invisible student?' No one remembers Obama being at Columbia.

In October of 2008, just prior to the Presidential election, Unqualified Reservations presented 2 articles concerning Obama's time at Columbia which quoted several sources claiming that neither they nor anyone they knew remembered Barack Obama being at Columbia University. Even in the pre-law department no one remembered ever seeing him in class--a highly unusual fact given Obama's penchant for wanting attention and given that students with the same major tend to remember who is studying with them.

Obama graduated from Columbia College in 1983, and after spending a year in New York, moved to Chicago.
Wayne Allyn Root says, "I don't know a single person at Columbia that knows him, and they all know me. I don't have a classmate who ever knew Barack Obama at Columbia. Ever! ... Nobody recalls him. I'm not exaggerating, I'm not kidding.
Questioner: Were you the exact same class?
Root: Class of '83 political science, pre-law Columbia University. You don't get more exact than that. Never met him in my life, don't know anyone who ever met him. At the class reunion, our 20th reunion five years ago, 20th reunion, who was asked to be the speaker of the class? Me. No one ever heard of Barack! Who was he, and five years ago, nobody even knew who he was... the guy who writes the class notes, who's kind of the, as we say in New York, the macha who knows everybody, has yet to find a person, a human who ever met him. Is that not strange? It's very strange...
When asked about his undergraduate training at Columbia University, The New Times states that Obama "declined repeated requests to talk about his New York years, release his Columbia transcript or identify even a single fellow student, co-worker, roommate or friend from those years."
To be fair, some people, albeit a very few, claim they remember Obama at Columbia, one being a professor:
NBC News interviewed Obama's former professor, Michael Baron, who taught an eight-student honors seminar called American Foreign Policy. Baron said he never expected Obama, who wrote a long paper on Soviet nuclear disarmament (Baron says he no longer has a copy), to ascend to such political heights. "You wouldn't say, 'Oh, he's going to be secretary of state or president someday,'" Baron told the network.
Yet the Chair of the Political Science Department, where Obama would have taken most of the courses for his degree in Political Science, does not remember Obama at all.
Explanations for this vary. One possibility is that he was out of the country in Pakistan--for what purpose nobody knows. The other is that Obama's time at Columbia was one of convenience, that is, to provide work of interest to the political science department in exchange for a degree:
So I am confident that Obama was working for something when he was in NY in 81-83. And whatever that something is, it (a) has some pull with the Columbia political science department, and (b) doesn't want this story to become news. And I am pretty confident that something relates, in some sense or part, to the New York radical community. Wouldn't you say this might be a bit larger, more stratified, complex and socially elite than, say, the local bowling club, Renne Faire, or what have you?
Because I am 100% sure that if Barack Obama was in a bunch of political-science classes at Columbia in 1981-83, he would have been widely noticed and remembered. If only because of his unusual name and unusual looks. A poli-sci program is not a civil-engineering department: it attracts people who are interested in people. And a Barack Obama who was not interested in school would not have gotten good grades - as I suspect he didn't at Occidental, either, where he is remembered as a party animal and soi-disant revolutionary. Not exactly the invisible man, in other words.
The 'New York radical community' indeed. Obama has admitted that during his college career he intentionally sought out and spent time with those who were considered Leftwing radicals. Bill Ayers is one who keeps popping up at every interval in Obama's history.
Thus, the question arises as to the purpose for which Columbia University allegedly granted a rather bogus degree to someone who did not attend class.
It is to be noted that Obama has spent millions of dollars keeping the details of his background a secret and his academic records sealed. This in itself raises more questions, as if the information concerning the Columbia University 'invisible student' syndrome were not enough.

Anthony - Did you go to college? I'm asking because I went to a top Southern university of about the same size as Columbia. I majored in math and economics and graduated near the top of my class about 15 years ago. I bet you couldn't find more than a few people who would remember me. Give it another 10-15 years, and that small number would likely decrease even further. Forget about the chair of either academic department knowing me...that person would likely have taught 1 class a year and the position would have changed hands several times over the years.

It could well be no one remembers him at Columbia because he was not at Columbia College. He may have been a student at the School of General Studies. This was a sort of "extension" of Columbia founded by Nicholas Murray Butler, to enable returning students, adult students, and others who had gone off the rails, to complete an undergraduate degree. It is a very useful program. I have never seen anyone claim Obama went to Columbia College, but the School of General Studies is definitely part of the University.

In response to a Freedom of Information Act request, the FBI has formally acknowledged a file existed on President Barack Obama's grandfather, Stanley Armour Dunham, that was destroyed May 1, 1997.
The FBI previously released some 600 pages of the FBI file of Frank Marshall Davis, the Chicago-based journalist and poet who as a member of the Communist Party USA retired in Hawaii and befriended Dunham.
Obama frequently sought advice from Davis during the future president's elementary and high school years.
Until the FBI's response to the FOIA request, there was no public disclosure of the existence of a file on Obama's grandfather.
The file raises the question whether the FBI considered Dunham to be a national security risk, possibly because of his association with Davis.

I go to Columbia NOW - political science, pre-law, dean's list, whole nine. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the political science chair doesn't know my name, because I don't know his/hers... regardless of the fact that I take the majority of my classes in the department. Same with the pre-law advisor. It's called being studious but independent - excuse our president for not attending weekly office hours.
