In a breaking news alert that aired late last evening on television station ABC15 in Phoenix, Arizona, it was reported that the next Congressional hearing on the Project Gunwalker scandal (Operation Fast and Furious) will likely be held jointly with the Senate Judiciary Committee and Darrell Issa's House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
ABC15 reporter Lori Jane Gliha stated,
Congressman Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, and committee member, Rep. Paul Gosar, were in Phoenix over the weekend, talking to the ABC15 Investigators about the future of the controversial case, which involves the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
More hearings will come, they said. The next people called to testify will likely do so in front of both the House Judiciary Committee and the Oversight and Government Reform committee, jointly.
The information represents a major new development in the investigation into the scandal. So far the Senate Judiciary Committee, under the control of Democrats, has expressed no interest in looking into the case that is now beginning to engulf multiple agencies within the Obama Administration, despite Senator Charles Grassley's efforts to pressure the committee to do so. Grassley is a Republican and is the ranking minority member of the Committee.
Over in the House, however, where Republicans won a decisive majority in November of 2010, Darrell Issa of California has launched a full investigation into the matter, making Gunwalker one of the primary tasks of his committee.
Given the division between the Senate and House, it is commonly known that unless Senate Democrats get on board with the Gunwalker investigation, nothing will come of the scandal no matter how much Issa's committee in the House uncovers.
But Issa apparently sees hopeful signs, telling ABC15,
“We want (the House Judiciary Committee) who has direct oversight over the Attorney General and of (the Department of Justice) to take a more active role, and we believe they will,” Issa said. Eventually, Attorney General Eric Holder and Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer will be called to testify, he said.
“This is the kind of thing that threatens the fabric of how America trusts law enforcement,” he said. “So, [the investigation] goes on until we get a real understanding that this can never happen again.”
Further, Congressman Gosser, R-Arizona, told reporters that several Arizona legislators are interested in holding hearings within the state and calling former U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona Dennis Burke to testify. Burke resigned abruptly after giving private testimony to Congressional leaders. But Gosser and state legislators wish to ask Burke specific questions regarding his role in the scandal.
