Guerr-EIGHT MINUTES: Jack Cochran is a travesty

courant.com

The most recent episode in the saga that is Jack Cochran’s life is yet another black spot on his tumultuous resume. After adding a New London High state football title to his already full trophy case of four Bloomfield and three New Britain title’s, Cochran was fired (1) in the past week for various violations.

Cochran’s “characteristics” are well-known. In his time at Bloomfield and New Britain, he developed excellence through angry, harmful patterns. As a tyrant, he was one of the best, and as a winner, he was equally good, but as a coach and a leader of young men, well, he is simply not cut out for that job.

After being forced out as the Warhawks’ coach after numerous state titles, for Bobby Knight-like reasons, Cochran resurfaced at New London in 2005 and led the Whalers to their first state title since 1992 (2). Yet, Cochran is one of those guys that you just know is not quite right.
He wasn’t right at Bloomfield or New Britain, how was he going to fit in at New London (3)?

It both angers me and saddens me to see a man so utterly confused with his approach to so many things in life that no matter how many chances people take, they always end up disappointed like the previous group.

I was shocked when he got the New London job, but with his credentials, why not take a chance?

Well, that chance paid off in one respect, but in the other, he simply put a blemish on the school and football program.

Ironically enough, the allegations being made are that Cochran scheduled unsanctioned out-of-season baseball practices (4). Oddly enough, it wasn’t on the football field where he slipped up this time, but sure enough, he slipped up again.

Then, the school has the nerve to say that he can keep his job (5) as a health teacher at the school. Let’s be real, that is the last thing keeping Cochran in New London.

The reason he was there was because he struck out everywhere else and he found the one school crazy enough (6) to still give him a chance.

Well, I think he might be at the end of the road in terms of Connecticut. It might be time to pack up and move out.

The lesson learned here is that certain people are built in different ways and while Cochran’s ability to win on the football field is indisputable, his ability to lead a group of young men comes into question because he lacks his own moral compass (7).

Now, he is appealing his firing as football coach because he the deal was that he would step aside as baseball coach, but his football job would remain in tact.

Well Jacky Boy, you had it coming. Is it really a surprise he lost his football job? You think the New London administration was satisfied by just getting a new baseball coach? No, the plan all along was to get him out the door (8) and these recent allegations provided that avenue.

He won, now he is done, and I hope once and for all, athletic departments across Connecticut have learned their lesson.

Cochran is a winner. He may not play completely clean but look at the results of his players graduating high school.

Jack cochran is a man that only his players can understand. He can either make you or a player or not but if you decided to be a player he helped you. He is a winner but he does things different than every other coach but then again not everyother coach has his stats. "Michael", the author of this article you must of been one of those want to be athletes that never had what it took to be an athlete. So stop writing your I hate coaches articles and grow a pair.
