Austin blues/rock/soul fusion band, The Couch headlined Hole in the Wall Thursday after performing in front of a packed house inside The Mohawk last month. The quartet has recently released their first official LP, Old and Touchin' Blue last December.
The band is comprised of Taylor Wilkins on guitar/vocals, Kyle Robarge and Jud Johnson on bass and drums and Sara Houser on keys and backing vocals. Their sound is akin to The Bright Light Social Hour but with a more mature tone. There are shades of Wilco, My Morning Jacket and The Black Keys in their music.
We like "Shakin'" and "Close to You" off the new EP. The small crowd at HITW seemed to take a liking to The Couch. We have found ourselves cueing up the new release more frequently than you would expect. The driving bass line along with Houser and Wilkins' harmonizing is infectious.
"Close to You" was a KUT song of the day last Summer and the band has been steadily building a following since. Last month's Mohawk set was so crowded, fans bunched up along the side stage staircase after filling the smallish indoor stage room.
We uploaded a few photos from the evening, including shots of opener, Nasimyu a jazz-fusion group from New Orleans who put on a mesmerizing set to warm up the crowd. Austin Music Weekly was at the CD release shoooting and we included the live video they posted on the left sidebar. If you missed the link at the beginning of the post, download the album here.
