Shows begin as early as today (Friday) and extend to January 8. Several of the showcases are highlighted below, however, there is something for every type of music fan during FREE WEEK, so if you do not see a recommended show you are interested in, ask us or look through Do512.com's list.

Free Week Kick-off! w/ Wild Child, Whiskey Shivers, The Eastern Sea - Beauty Bar - 8:30p

Eye in the Sky Collective kicks off FREE WEEK tonight with a stellar line-up with The Eastern Sea and Wild Child as noticeable highlights on the bill. Examiner was there last time Matt Hines and company played the indoor stage at Emo's and it was an impressive performance. We are looking forward to seeing The Eastern Sea's energetic stage show again.

Wild Child has been getting a lot of Austin blogger buzz, especially in the second half of 2011. We are looking forward to hearing the Americana locals live after reading so much about the group. Shakey Graves and Walter Lukens open.

Saturday is New Year's Eve. See our recommendations here

Broken Resolutions: The White White Lights W/ Little Radar, The Soapbox Spellbinders, Royal Forest - Swan Dive - 9pm

We figured you might need a day to recover from NYE in Austin, consequently, our preview resumes on Monday with Austin Writes Music and CoolinAustin's Broken Resolutions show featuring The White White Lights with charismatic frontwoman, Jenny Gacy who wowed us with her performance at Emo's last month. Royal Forest, Little Radar and The Soapbox Spellbinders round out the bill.

Set times:

12:30 AM - The Soapbox Spellbinders
11:30 PM - The White White Lights
10:30 PM - Little Radar
09:30 PM - Royal Forest

Free Week: The Eastern Sea + Danny Malone + Federal State Local + My Golden Calf - Mohawk - 7:30pm

If you do not get a chance to see The Eastern Sea tonight, do not fret, because the band headlines a second FREE WEEK show at Mohawk on Monday. Two great acts are sharing the stage with them, Danny Malone and My Golden Calf which we have heard (thanks to Austin Eavesdropper) but not seen perform yet.

Danny Malone is should not be underestimated. The man recently wrote new material while in Europe on a Danish government artist grant. He is a phenomenal performer as well.

Hard Proof Afrobeat, Hundred Visions, Zlam Dunk, East Cameron Folkcore - Red 7 - 8pm

If you are a regular Austin Concerts Examiner reader then you know of our love for Afrobeat locals, Hard Proof who recently taped a Local Live segment for University of Texas student-run radio station, KVRX. The taping was a success and the band is looking forward to making their work known across the country in 2012.

Examiner will be announcing an official fundraiser for conga player, Tony Cruz who is recovering from minor surgery this month. How can you help? Visit Hard Proof's bandcamp page and download the Hard Proof Album which features members of The Calm Blue Sea, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Ocote Souls Sounds, The Echocentrics and more. Proceeds from album sales will go towards making sure Tony can keep his infectiously happy conga beat going for fans.

The Boxing Lesson, New Roman Times, Megafauna, The Couch - Swan Dive - 9pm

One of our favorite promotion companies, White Siren Presents is sponsoring The Boxing Lesson with three great acts including San Marcos indie-rockers, The Couch who recently packed the inside stage at The Mohawk on a week night.

The Boxing Lesson's EP, Muerta is a masterpiece homage to Pink Floyd that deserves multiple listens on your best playback unit. Yes, it is that good. Examiner has had the tracks on our playlist since first hearing the album last year.

Friday, January 6

The Calm Blue Sea, Octopus Project DJ sets, The Clouds Are Ghosts - The Mohawk - 9pm

The Calm Blue Sea features Hard Proof drummer and founder, Stephen Bidwell whose band takes instrumental,  progressive, post-rock to new heights. If you like Explosions in the Sky, these guys will impress you. Hearing them on The Mohawk's outdoor stage is a great way to get acquainted with this band if you have not already been to see the show.
