Top five favorite comic writers right now part 1

Sterling Gates and Geoff Johns (Photo: Andy Khouri)

This is my own list, this isn’t a list I’ve pulled off the Internet somewhere or whatever, and these are the five writers in comics right now that I think are writing some of the most interesting stories. You may have different opinions and that’s good, post your comments about which you think is better or worse or indifferent.

This is the first two of the list.

1. Geoff Johns – Probably also one of the most over-rated writers right now as well. Geoff tells interesting stories though, his entire run on Green Lantern since rebooting the title back in 2005 has been a great read. Out of those stories I highly recommend reading the “Rebirth” arc and then the “Sinestro Corps Wars” and then “Secret Origin” those are probably the three that are the best that are already collected. I do highly recommend picking up anything that has to do with the “Blackest Night” series that Geoff is overseeing right now. Even the non-Johns stories are very good and they all tie into together pretty well. Of course Geoff has written other things he’s been writing The Flash off and on for the last number of years. Also he wrote some of the Justice League of America and even some Justice Society of America stories. Geoff originally started off as an assistant to Richard Donner, who directed the first Superman movie back in 1978, and then Lethal Weapon series and so forth. Johns then went on to start writing comics and has been awesome ever since. Geoff is on twitter at: twitter.com/geoffjohns0

2. Sterling Gates – a relative newcomer to comic book writing he took over the Supergirl series earlier this year and has made the series worth reading. Supergirl has been around for so long and she’s either a character you like or someone you find fairly useless. Jeph Loeb re-introduced her back in the Superman/Batman series about four years ago and she’s been sort of floating along since without much use. Sterling seems to have a good grasp on the character, she’s not just a teenage girl dressed in skimpy clothes these days. The story has been really good; Gates started the series off with a whole arc about Superwoman and who she was and what she wanted. Supergirl ended up in the process having to find out who this other supposed Kryptonian character was, not an easy task when there’s now a “New Krypton” floating on the opposite end of our orbit. So far Gates is hitting the mark and pretty much anything I’ve picked up by him has been good, while it’s not much that he’s written, it won’t break your bank to pick up all of his stuff. Sterling got his start by basically running into Geoff Johns and started off sort of the same way Geoff did, Sterling was Johns assistant and then he pitched some ideas about various characters for Green Lantern and then to DC about how he’d handle Supergirl and they liked it.
