Val Blakely is mom to two children who were both diagnosed as small infants with having hearing loss. Her oldest has Goldenhar Syndrome and Mondini malformation whereas her youngest child has no known explanation for her deafness. Both wore hearing aids for years and now hear cochlear implants. She helped develop DeafVillage.com and the Alabama PEEPs Program. Aside from freelance writing, she is a substitute teacher.
