Review of The Jacket I Wear in the Snow by Michigan author Shirley Neitzel

It is winter in Michigan and anyone with or without children is sure to be familiar with the art of layering clothing and bundling up for even short trips outdoors. “The Jacket I Wear in the Snow” is a darling rhyming book for young children that follows the task of layering winter clothes - "bunchy and hot, wrinkled a lot, stiff in the knee, and too big for me!"

Children’s book author Shirley Neitzel not only delights children and adults with her rhymes but has her own personal experience with the chore of layering. Calling Grand Rapids home these days she also spent her childhood in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

“When I taught, I read to my students every day and often gave them opportunities to write. Sometimes I shared my writing with the class. One story was about a child with a stuck zipper. The kids laughed in the right places. Friends encouraged me to send it to a publisher. The editor at Greenwillow liked it, and “The Jacket I Wear in the Snow” became my first published book.” - Shirley Neitzel

The Jacket I Wear in the Snow” is not only entertaining and fun but is a great resource for young readers, those learning to count, and for helping little ones learn to dress and undress themselves. Parents I am sure will appreciate that last one  - remember the struggles as you try to do one thing while the child at hand is trying to do the total opposite. I remember myself often saying, “Don’t move, just let me do it, pretend you’re a statue.”
