Buffalo Sabres owner, Tom Golisano, packed up his bags and moved his residency from his native Rochester, New York to Naples, Florida. The move was predicated by the NY tax structure that is affecting so many citizens of the state. Golisano estimates that he can save close to $14,000 a day by making Florida his permanent residence. The two-time gubernatorial candidate is blaming political leadership for the consistent tax increases and stressed change is needed.
Golisano, founder of Paychex Inc. purchased the Buffalo Sabres along with co-owner Larry Quinn and vowed that they would remain in Buffalo.
However, after two seasons of missing the playoffs, Golisano’s involvement has decreased immensely.
Now does this mean Sabres’ fans should be concerned about a possible relocation? Could Golisano’s move to Florida be just a precursor for the selling of the team?
No, no and more no.
But the owner who adored this team may be watching more games from his Florida living room, than the owners’ suite.
Even after 6 years with the Sabres, his office remains a barren sanctity of pristine furniture. An unblemished desk idly waits for duty. Framed photos and awards lie patiently on the floor waiting to be hung. Needless to say, this move to Florida ensures Golisano will have less and less involvement, allowing Quinn to be the primary decision maker.
