I've been a major proponent of a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather dream match, but recently, things have changed. After Mayweather's recent statements about Pacquiao, I think it's more than fair to say that Margarito is actually more deserving of a Pacquiao payday than Floyd Mayweather Jr. The insincere apology he made is meaningless.
Mayweather now says that he knows he will fight Pacquiao. Why the sudden change of heart? How can he be so sure that he will fight Pacquiao, who allegedly wouldn't agree to drug testing demands all the way up to the fight?
Did Pacquiao call Mayweather up and tell him that next time around he'll do the blood testing up to the day of the fight, right before the former sat down and made that disgusting, vulgar, racist video? Or, did Pacquiao actually agree to Mayweather's terms for the last negotiations?
How did Mayweather go from not knowing if the fight would ever occur because of Pacquiao's so-called refusal to take fully random blood testing, to being absolutely certain that he would end up fighting (and beating) the Pound-for-Pound King? This, to me, is the most intriguing question that Mayweather's tirade brought to the surface, although these implications have been largely ignored.
At this point, I believe that the majority of boxing fans wouldn't blame Pacquiao if he refuses to ever again make an attempt to negotiate a fight with Mayweather. Why give Mayweather a $50 million payday after the things he said?
Retired pro boxer Stacy Goodson of Paris, Arkansas feels that Mayweather is important to the sport. After I shared a link to the Mayweather video with Goodson, he said; "I like him. Hate keeps things stirred up, and that's good for the sport."
I do understand Goodson's point of view. Floyd Mayweather is never boring, never fails to stir the pot and always maintains the character of the sport's greatest villain. However, it is entirely possible to go too far, and if anybody ever went too far, Mayweather did.
Just as I've shunned the Pacquiao fans who resort to racist remarks in their attempts to stand up for their hero, Mayweather must be shunned for his racist comments toward Pacquiao.
I'm more ready than ever to be ringside in Dallas for a great brawl between Pacquiao and Margarito. And finally, I'm also perfectly content if Pacquiao never fights Mayweather.
After all, according to Mayweather, he can make "$50 - $100 million a fight" without even facing Pacquiao, right?
I hardly think so. Especially, not now.
Mayweather just caused himself to "need" a fight with Pacquiao more than ever while simultaneously making it less likely to ever happen.
