In the book, To the Rescue: Found Dogs with a Mission, Elisa Lufkin writes about rescued dogs who have jobs.
Rita is a member of BARK, the Baseball Aquatic Retrieval Korps. When a baseball is hit into the water outside the Giants stadium, she jumps in the water and retrieves it.
Jada, Marshal, and Mardi Gras look for bedbugs.
Ally and Marvin have had books written about them. Ally's book is called, Ally's Busy Day' The Story of a Service Dog. Marvin's book is called, Marvelous Marvin. Marvin also paints pictures with his tail.
Many of the dogs, photographed in black and white by Diana Walker, are part of reading programs. While children read, the dogs listen intently.
The other dogs are involved with a variety of organizations. Some: are trained to do searches; visit patients in nursing homes and hospitals; and comfort rescue workers after tragedies.
The dogs are all happy to go to work and seem to have a sixth sense. .
