In an online contest that lasted over four months, Hawaii managed to rank #4 out of five top states to receive a portion of the 100,000 book prize sponsored by Cheerios and First Book national. At the beginning of the summer Hawaii was 8th on the list but the persistence of local Advisory Board Members in First Book-Oahu, and the diligent voting support of the community prevailed. This win comes in the wake of a previous 50,000 book prize from a separate First Book campaign in 2009.
"Thank you so much to everyone who participated and voted. Every book makes a difference", said Cindy Morita, Oahu Advisory Board Chair.
The new books will be given to Title 1 schools and organizations serving impoverished children in Hawaii. All local organizations are encouraged to register and apply for a portion of the books. For more information visit the First Book-Oahu webpage.
First Book-Oahu is also hosting a Membership Drive for volunteers and board members, so if you enjoy helping children and are passionate about books and literacy in the community visit here for more info.
