![]() I used yesterday as a day to recharge my batteries and get some rest, as I'm finding infants can seriously sap your energy. It is a bit difficult to concentrate on world affairs when you've got a miniature person demanding your attention almost every waking hour. Nowadays, the most pressing natural disasters seem to be the ones that occur inside my son's diapers! |
![]() I had to rush this cartoon because of a last-minute design project, and I'm not completely happy with the way it turned out. However, a prominent cartoonist once told me that since his best cartoons are the ones he shoots out without laboring over the lines, he limits himself to no more than two hours for getting the drawing finished. He's an incredibly gifted artist, so something he draws in five minutes would be ten times better than something that took me half a day to draw. But I do think he has a point -- after all, art schools early on emphasize activities that teach you how to capture images with only a few flicks of the wrist. With all that in mind, I can take satisfaction in the knowledge that, if nothing else, a rushed cartoon can help me get better. |
![]() To be honest, I'm getting a little tired of drawing Hillary cartoons, so I'm hoping she'll pull out of the race soon. Of course, she seems to occupy a plot neighboring President Bush's in Fantasyland, which means I'll likely be drawing more of her. |
![]() The D.C. government's tax office can't seem to do anything right nowadays! See this article from Monday's newspaper for the scoop. |
![]() I noticed Hillary Clinton is still having trouble with her basic mathematics skills, so I drew this cartoon. Probably my favorite part is the "A+B=ABBA" written on the chalkboard. It's that kind of quirky detail in other cartoonists' work that often makes me laugh out loud. But, of course, I'm a cartooning geek. |
![]() Today's cartoon gave me the chance to give my caricature muscles a good work out. Call it cartoon calisthenics. I haven't drawn John McCain all that much, even though his turkey neck is manna from heaven to cartoonists. On the gas tax issue, I was working the math out in my head ... the federal gas tax is 18.4 cents ... if the tax is suspended and I fill up my car with 10 gallons of gas, I will have saved $1.84. What a deal, huh? |
![]() As soon as I read the news about the FTA reversing course on the Dulles Metrorail extension, the image of a re-animated corpse popped into my head. The officials and contractors backing the multibillion-dollar transit project have to be practicing necromancy! There's no other explanation. |
![]() I don't know if everyone will be able to read it, but the binky Uncle Sam is holding is labeled "stimulus." I probably should have "zoomed in" more on the image so that the label would be clearer. For those regular readers who enjoy my wordier entries, I apologize for the past week-and-a-half's worth of blog postings. I have a few good excuses, though, for my lack of exposition. I was working from home all last week because I recently became a father! Maxwell (Max) Owen Beeler was born Friday, April 18, 2008, at 2:36 p.m. via c-section, weighing 8.5 lbs., measuring 20.5 inches long and in perfect health. Eve, the love of my life, and baby Max have been recuperating at home and are doing well -- though Eve is, of course, a bit sleep-deprived. That's the handsome little tyke in the picture on the right. I guess it's obvious by today's cartoon that he's already started influencing me in a big way! |
