Marvin Sease has passed at 64 – Pics

A blues legend has died.  Marvin Sease passed away today, February 8, 2011.

An official cause of death has not yet been released but several bloggers are saying he had pneumonia.

In eight more days, he would have celebrated his 65th birthday.

See the photo gallery here.

Marvin started his career singing with the Five Gospel Crowns in Charleston, South Carolina.

Soon after turning 20, he went to New York and joined up with a group called the Gospel Crowns.

After performing in the gospel circuit, Marvin decided to start an R&B group.  He gathered his three brothers and built Sease.

He performed throughout the blues festival and blues club circuits.

His explicit lyrics were a turn from his gospel roots, but they gained him a huge following and much fame.

In 1986, Marvin released an independent album titled “Marvin Sease” and it featured his very popular song Ghetto Man.

Hear Marvin Sease sing Ghetto Man.

He got his big break by signing with Polygram

Candy Licker was the song that propelled Marvin to stardom.

The lyrics were explicit and the song receiver very little airplay.

Still, the song was successful through word of mouth, jukebox play and live performances.

Ever since, Marvin has been recording and playing blues festivals and clubs ever since and has a cult-like following.

Marvin Sease was scheduled to appear at several blues festivals this month including Greensboro and Cleveland.

RIP, Marvin.

I loved Marvin Sease -- the man and his music! The range of his voice, the gentleness of his spirit and the love he had for his fans and his music, will live in every person who was lucky enough to ever see him perform and hear his music. He never acquired the fame that was due him, but he will be remembered as one of the true masters of his craft! He loved and respected his fans, women, the "BLUES" and God! I know God must have needed Marvin, but our world here on earth will be a little dimmer, sadder and lonely with you! I LOVE YOU MARVIN -- your smile, your voice, your humanity is with me and inside me forever! Now you will recieve the fame from GOD that you have earned! Rest well......Darling........

God bless your family in this time of need and you will truly be missed but never forgotten

  • This is sooooo crazy. I've been a long admirer of his music and just a week ago, I changed my picture over on Facebook to his and gave myself the name Backdoor Jody in his honor. I was going to change everything back to normal shortly, but I'm certainly going to keep it up longer now. RIP Marvin

When I first heard the song Candy L at my 10 year class reunion I thought who in the world make a song like that? Of course now that I have been out of school for almost 35 yrs total , I say to myself that song is kinda cool saying that to say this when you are young somethings you don't understand but when you get older it makes all the sense in the world. RIP Marvin Sease enjoyed all your concerts and cds...
