Use for the command "down" - National Train Your Dog Month

While you have now conquered uses for the sit command, try thinking of ways to use the "down" for your Belgian. APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) has a list of 25 ways to use the down.

First, of course, your Belgian has to do a down. This is harder for most dogs than doing a sit. A down is a somewhat vulnerable and submissive position. It is best to teach this in a quiet area without other dogs around - so try this at home, not at puppy class!

With your puppy or dog standing, take a great treat and bring it from her nose down and back between her front legs. It helps to do this on a slippery floor, as many Belgians will simply slide into the down position. Immediately reward her, mark the behavior with a "yes" or a click. Do this two or three times a couple of times a day and your pup will have it down.

Wrestling a Belgian puppy or dog into the down position only makes them resent it more. If your pup won't down, watch for when she goes to lie down on her own and mark and reward the behavior.

Once your dog has a down there are many, many uses for this behavior. Have your Belgian down by your side while you write your check or fill out forms at the veterinary hospital. Receptionists and secretaries will thank you for the legible handwriting.

Dining at an outdoor cafe? This is much easier with your Belgian lying quietly at your side. Her good example will stress how dogs should be welcome at such places. Lying down quietly on a grooming table can make grooming go much faster and more pleasantly for both of you.

For obedience and rally competitions, your Belgian has to lie down. In agility, while AKC no longer requires a set position on the pause table, USDAA does still require a down. The down gives you a chance to catch your breath and lead out with your dog safely on the table as well.

While many Belgian herders use a "stand stop", a "lie down" can come in handy there too. Some trackers like to have their Belgians lie down to indicate articles they have found. A down can also be part of some cute tricks like roll over and play dead.
