New year, new look

The holidays are coming to an end and the New Year is approaching. This is the perfect time to revamp your look. The easiest way to create the “new you” is by adjusting or changing your hair color or cut. This may sound a bit intimidating but with preparation and application by a color specialist you can be thrilled with the results.

First step is to decide what appeals to you. Cut out pictures in magazines of hair styles and shades that you think you would like to explore. Take these to your stylist and discuss your options. In 2011 you can expect to see more color as shades tend to warm up in fall and winter with rich shades such as deep reds, warm browns and warm tones of blonde.

Below is a chart to assist you with color choices based on your current hair color and skin tone:

Blonde Cool : If you want to go red, try vibrant tones like tomato and plum. For brunette, deep chocolate or chestnut browns are the most complementary.
Blonde Warm:  Going red? Strawberry or golden shades are ideal. Brunette? Choose a bronze or golden brown.
Red Cool: For blonde, a neutral, honey-toned shade works best, while redheads going brunette should look for neutral or ash-brown tones.
Red Warm: Going blonde can be tricky with this skin tone. Avoid brassy shades: choose warm gold tones instead. For brunette, try auburn or mahogany.
Brunette Cool: Talk to your colorist before going blonde, since tones don’t look the same on every brunette. With red, decide how vibrant you want it, then choose a “real” red shade, not gold or coppery tones.
Brunette Warm: Going blonde? Ask your colorist about shades. For red, aim for a copper or bronze to complement your already-warm skin tone.
