EMI Music has announced the track lists for the John Lennon remastered CDs previously announced for Oct. 4 (except Oct. 5 in North America). The releases, to celebrate Lennon's 70th birthday on Oct. 9, feature new titles, including "Double Fantasy Stripped Down," "Power To The People: The Hits," "Gimme Some Truth" and the "John Lennon Signature Box", plus eight additional remastered John Lennon solo albums.
(You can see a photo slideshow of artwork from the CDs at the bottom of the page.)
The albums have been digitally remastered from Lennon's original mixes. "Double Fantasy" will be featured in a new "Stripped Down" version produced by Yoko Ono and Jack Douglas, Lennon’s original co-producers for the album. "Some Time In New York City" has been restored to include the six ‘Live Jam’ recordings featured on the original album.
The deluxe 11CD and digital John Lennon Signature Box includes 13 previously unreleased home recordings. Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, and Julian Lennon have each written personal essays for the collection. The cover art for the new titles includes original drawings by Sean Lennon for "Double Fantasy Stripped Down," while the cover of 1974’s "Walls and Bridges" has been restored to its original artwork.

I think it's a total rip that Double Fantasy Stripped looks to be NOT included in the 11CD Box Set. Total rip.
Is that true ? The "Stripped Down" version is NOT in the boxset ?? Rip off !!!
The "Stripped Down" version IS included in the box set. Follow this link to arrive at Amazon's picture of the set and zoom in on the "Double Fantasy" album and read the spine. It is included but it doesn't seem like the hand-drawn picture by Sean is on the cover. Simply put, if you want everything offered by Lennon that will be released during this reissue campaign, get the box set. You will have every Lennon song without duplicates, a-la the Beatles stereo box set.

From today's EMI press releases, it appears that the Signature Box will contain 11 discs (8 studio albums and 2 bonus discs, with "Sometime in New York City" being on 2 discs), and will subsequently NOT contain "Double Fantasy Stripped Down." Amazon.com has the number of discs as 12, but it's likely that this is incorrect.
I'm not sure how to explain the photo of the set; it does show "Double Fantasy Stripped Down." However, the fact that the bonus discs are not displayed leads me to believe that it may not accurately represent the contents of the set.
I am a first generation Beatles fan. Since February 1964 I have almost always thought that The Beatles and their organization were a class act that treated their fans with a great deal of respect. The Fall reissue campaign is clearly designed to exploit those of us who have supported The Beatles for 46 years (and longer in Britain). Any of these individual releases would be good for the general market. Packaging bonus tracks in various formats that don't match up is a marketing ploy designed to exploit the fans who are the only people who will buy the multiple formats. I resent it. I resent it a lot. But it seems really strange to single out the Lennon releases. I am no happier about having Band On The Run released for the 4th time on CD. And even less pleased about the re-release of the Apple catalog again.
I agree completely and I'm waiting to see what's "new" about the McCartney reissues. He has no excuse for recycling previously issued material. What about the Cold Cuts album we've heard about for decades? The full 2 CD McCartney II, or retrospective box set that's had 2 release dates retracted? The Trevor Jones tapes were just a glimpse of what's possible for future release.
It seems that the Band on the Run release will have lots of extras. A dvd of One Hand Clapping appears to be included along with lots of other songs.
Lennon's releases are getting singled out more because they are far too close to the releases we have now — or less, when one considers that these "remasters" lack the bonus tracks from the last "remasters" which some fans are still collecting. And what IS mostly new is either more outtakes not good enough to make the Anthology, or the "stripped" version that has been artificially collected.
Band On The Run doesn't have that problem. The new edition isn't just a remaster; yes, there's a cheaper single disc version, but the deluxe adds in One Hand Clapping plus some contemporary videos (like the cover shoot and being in Lagos) that will enhance the material. [The extra disc from the anniversary edition is useless but has to be circulated by the new company now that EMI doesn't have it.] McCartney's also said this is the beginning of the deluxe remasters under Concord — which bodes well if they all have added material like this — and goes beyond just a box set of outtakes.
And the Apple ones have a lot of unreleased material and/or hard to get material all at once, and digitally for the first time, so that's a bonus too.
Why aren't Meat City (45 mix), (Just Like) Starting Over (12" mix) and Love (45 remix) included on the singles bonus disc in the Signature Box? It's a real head scratcher considering two of the three were even released during John's lifetime.
I understand Double Fantasy Stripped Down being released as a tribute to what would have been John's 70th birthday, but every other Lennon CD has been remastered and reissued over the past 10 years. What's different; that these are from the original mixes? Why weren't the original remasters? There's nothing new here except essays from Yoko, Julian and Sean. I'll gladly hand over a couple hundred bucks for the box set for those. Right. You can't keep exploiting fans by re-re-remastering the same music every five years.
I have one request for Yoko and Company;
We need an all-inclusive, complete scores, sheet music book, of the songs of John Lennon.
Similar to The Beatles Complete Scores with LARGER PRINT :)
The current sheet music availability is spotty at best.
I still would much rather have had Live In NYC Dvd & Cd remaster,it's pretty hard to justify buying these as i have all the previous remasters,if i do give in this will be the last time as Yoko doesn't seem to have much left to make any further releases worthwhile.
Hey folks just wait til you find out the surprise that is yet to be announced for Double Fantasy Stripped!! The last two tracks are the ones to watch... I can say no more :o)
I will gather john's voice will be added/amped up on both tracks, since he recorded tracking vocals for at least one of them. A question I have -- since all of JL's songs will be stripped down bringing out JL's vocals, what will happen to the YO tracks? Left alone? Also, stripped down so we can hear more of YO.
Yoko is stripped down too
the final track in an unreleased John and Yoko duet version! John is not heard on the original Yoko track, but it was long rumoured even way back in 1980 that John had recorded it... and he did :)
So now do we have to buy "GIMME SOME TRUTH" a 4 CD set to get one song "Here We Go Again" Remastered? - Come on....
Because Yoko is counting on foolish fans to waste their money buying these CDS -- AGAIN.
I will not be buying any of them. There's very little new here that most Lennon fans don't already have. She's just greedy, relying on people's trauma over the anniversary of his murder to pad her bank account. Appalling but not surprising.
So the Stripped Down album is NOT on the Signature Box, right? In order to get everything (ouch!), I would steel need the Stripped Down CD, the Gimme Some Truth boxed set, plus the Experience Edition of Power To The People. I hope they´re really trying to make us hope for all the money we´ll have to put out for these. AND the Apple remasters, the new Band On The Run... It´s a long and expensive chains of re-releases... And still NO remastered Extra Texture, Dark Horse, Live in the NYC, let alone new material...
I was reading this page earlier and thought I had read that stripped down not on the Signature box was a false alarm. So it's not? Major drag. And shouldn't Menlove be on it? The solo discs don't have the bonus tracks? I wanted something complete, one package. I've been eyeing The Complete Elvis Masters set. It's $749. Ouch! But it's everything Elvis released during his life and bonus rare tracks.
And what is: POWER TO THE PEOPLE: THE HITS (EXPERIENCE EDITION) [CD/DVD]? And why isn't it in the 11 disc box set? Is it audio only?
Band on the Run with extras?
If I get the Elvis box, some of this stuff has got to wait (a long while).
Are the tracks on Home Tapes all unreleased because we've heard demos of "God", "I Found Out" and "Serve Yourself" among others on the JL Anthology or Acoustic? I've seen where some tracks are listed as studio recordings or home demo in some places. I'm glad there is Lennon product still coming although the themed box set seems like a strange package with some puzzling track lists. I still can't get over all of "Rock and Roll" being offered on the Roots disc, albeit in a different running order and the "Rock and Roll" remaster will be on the shelves too.
Looking at the track list for all the material, all I can say is that it would have made more logical sense to just reissue the Lennon box set with Double Fantasy's double edition rather than this lot. The big box set looks to me like cherry picking from the Anthology set to enhance the other studio albums, the smaller box set looks to me like thematically rearranging most of the original box, and Gimme Some Truth just another cash grab — after all, wasn't one of them just reissued as a CD/DVD set when John's catalogue went to iTunes?
DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
I consider Menlove Avenue and Live in New York City to be part of the Lennon catalog. Why are they not included?
Where is 'Live Peace In Toronto'?
People keep complaining, "I have to buy the same songs over and over!" No you don't. I've said this before, and I'll say it again--if you don't want it, don't buy it. A hobby should be fun. If you buy something you don't want just because you feel obligated to, then it's an addiction. I've been wanting to add the Apple albums to my collection for some time and am glad that they're being re-released. Those of you who already have them can pass--as I will on these Lennon reissues.
Well, this is getting ridiculous. I bought the new Beatles remasters from last year. They were gorgeous, and marked an improvement over the pre-existing 1987 CDs. I also bought the individual Lennon remasters released last decade, and the sound on most of them went from similar to awesome improvement over the 1984/1991 original Lennon releases. However, since some were remixed, I kept both editions.
But I am not buying this stuff for the 3rd time, and the second time in less than 10 years. The bonus stuff material is gone, the absolutely erratic arrangement of tracks on the "Gimme Some Truth" box reminds me of the "Working Class Hero: The Definitive" 2CD hits set from not too long ago. I would only be interested in the bonus materials.
Questions: Say I bought ALL the official releases on CD that have been out from Lennon, both remastered and unremastered. Is there anything I won't have if I pass on all these releases, apart from the "Stripped Down" mix of Double Fantasy?
It was already disappointing to see that the bonus tracks of the previous campaign sometimes used tracks from other albums (like Menlove Ave or the Anthology), while some bonus tracks were even duplicated (Yoko's "Listen The Snow Is Falling" was a bonus first on remaster of John & Yoko's "The Wedding Album" and then again on "Sometime In NYC", together with "Happy Xmas", while taking space out from at least one additional track from the Lennon/Ono/Zappa concert). The "John Lennon Acoustic" album was disappointing in that 50% of its contents were already on the Anthology. In general, my impression of the re-release strategy followed for Lennon's catalog has been erratic, and this new release campaign doesn't really help matters. Instead of "filling the gaps", Yoko has re-released everything all over again, with blurry information about what is really new, and how these releases overlap in contents among themselves and with the pre-existing catalog (and, perhaps more importantly, what is EXCLUSIVE to each release).
Any truthful, knowledgeable report would be appreciated. This site, once the ultimate source for Beatles news in timeliness and accuracy, is not really helping on this one.
I'm happy with the remasters with the bonus tracks released not long ago. I will download the new trcks...
I love Lennon, but I think I'll pass. I'd rather spend money on the Dylan MONO set and get something that will sound different/be different. I question the omissions on the Lennon sets, LIVE PEACE, MENLOVE, LIVE IN NYC, as many of the others do above. I'd prefer to have something substantially different that we've had before, love Lennon or not.
