Brute Force wants to sing his 'King of Fuh' on late-night TV

Former Apple singer Brute Force (aka Stephen Friedland) has launched a campaign to persuade late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to have him appear on his show and sing his Apple Records song "King of Fuh."

A letter on his website gives the reason behind the effort. "In 1969, George Harrison and the Beatles tried to share a New York singer-songwriter named Brute Force with the world and failed, because Capitol Records chickened out. You can right that wrong today, and finish what the Beatles started."

"King of Fuh," for those not familiar with the song, was recorded by Brute Force for Apple Records, but never got much airplay. (Transpose the first and last words of the title and you'll understand why.) The song was included on the recent EMI compilation "Come and Get It: The Best of Apple Records," which also featured songs by Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Billy Preston, Doris Troy and Badfinger. The compilation was the first time the song received a widespread release.

His appearance on the show would certainly cause some attention given the nature of the song, something he acknowledges in his letter.

"Brute Force wishes to affect the taboo on language by the performance of his song 'King of Fuh' on national TV. I urge you to book him on your show so he can make a social and cultural contribution and help to end the fear associated with speaking certain words in the media, and at the same time definitely bring a load of laughs to your audience. Jimmy, won't you please finish what George Harrison and the Beatles started in 1969, and share an amazing artist and his long-censored song with the world?"

  • Oh, puh-leeze. Having now heard "King of Fuh" I am completely underwhelmed. It's transgressive only to fifth-graders, and clever only on that level. As a "statement" it's banal.
