Seattle's Crème Tangerine has been re-creating the Beatles' 1969 rooftop concert each year since 2009 at a local restaurant. That first one, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the original event, featured special guest Ken Mansfield, who was among those who saw the 1969 show. (Read our interview here.)
This week, they'll do it again. The free concert, co-sponsored with KCMQ-FM (104.5), will take place at noon Friday on the roof of the Copacabana Café in the Pike Place Market (1520½ Pike Place) in Seattle. The annual rooftop show takes place on the last Friday of January on the same calendar day and at the same time historically the Beatles last performance took place on the Apple rooftop in London in 1969.

"The music of the Beatles is profoundly meaningful to people. It transcends anniversary’s or dates or frequencies," drummer Jeff Lockhart told us. "The rooftop event the Beatles performed is a moment in musical history that people connect with. The greatest band in the world became a garage band for a lunch time to perform their swan song," he said.
Performing with the band will be some special guests, including Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Don Wilson of the Ventures, Roger Fisher from Heart, and Alan White of Yes. White was also drummer on the John Lennon's ”Imagine” and George Harrison “All Things Must Pass” albums.
“It’s been so cool these past few years to see the streets of Pike Place Market packed shoulder-to-shoulder with people celebrating the music of the Beatles on the last Friday of January. This music truly is a common bond people share together,” says Dan Grant, the group's lead singer.
Crème Tangerine is a Beatle tribute band that isn't a lookalike or soundalike band, but one that focus on performing the music. Their shows have included Beatle hits and special events where the White Album and "Abbey Road" have been performed in their entirety.
Lockhart says the event is a chance for the band to bond and band together with their hometown.
"Every year Crème Tangerine takes the opportunity after the holidays to give our community a party – a reason to celebrate something profound during the cold rainy time of year in Seattle. It gives music fans and Beatles fans a moment to unite and celebrate that musical unity for free and organic. Its tremendously meaningful to Crème Tangerine to have the honor of producing this each year now for our city and gives us great joy to see how it touches people."
