Spring Street Tavern and Club Underground

Nestled away in a sleepy Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood, the Spring is a hybrid of old and new Northeast. Which is a big reason why myself (and I assume others) are lured to this classic bar. Divey but solid, the Spring is the epitome of a neighborhood bar, but possesses many unique quirks. The Spring's decor is straightforward; bar, pub tables, booths in a small dining area, and serves a full menu. The breakfast burrito and buffalo wings are among the best I've had. The Spring also offers some pretty rad happy hours. This includes an early bird happy hour from 8 am-12 noon. Much appreciated by 3rd shifters, old timers looking for that 9 am screwdriver, or just plain barflys. The memories of going to the Spring at 9 AM; eating a breakfast burrito, crossing my fingers on each pull tab provided with drink (which gives you a chance for half off, or even a free drink) and watching the Price is Right are near and dear to me. Bloodys and screwdrivers are $4 until 10 am, and the next happy hour is from 3 pm- 7 pm, consisting of domestic bottles and taps for $2.25, $1 off ALL drinks, and several cheap appetizers. They also have themed nights (i.e. Taco Tuesdays) like many other bars, and basic bar games.

Entering the Spring may seem uneventful, but you will see every type of person here especially on weekend nights. Partially in thanks to the opening of Club Underground a few years back. They took the basement and gussied it up with a bar, bathrooms and a stage, and started to book bands in the thrash, punk and rock genres. This was much to the chagrin of upstairs regulars and visitors. Noisy music and flamboyant punks, metal heads, goths alike starting occasionally gracing the traditional little tavern. Some people were puzzled, and some were pleased. But at the end of the day, it only adds to the charm of the Spring. You can come here and get your sports watching on, your grub on, your drink on, your rockin out on, your people watching on, and chat with some of the most awesome bartenders in Minneapolis. Often times, if I want a good dose of proverbial shell shock, I will often alternate between the Spring and Club Underground when they are featuring music. ESPECIALLY on hip hop night! It's delightfully disorienting. Lately, Club Underground is featuring Comedy and cheap drink specials every Sunday, so slap some concealer underneath those hungover eyes, throw on a hoodie, and go to this tavern where you can choose to remain inconspicuous or make a mess of new "bar friends". The Spring has long been my favorite neighborhood bar in Northeast Minneapolis, and it was also the City Pages in 2006.
