101-year-old Virgil Coffman buys new Transformers Camaro. Meet Virgil, and learn about Bumblebee.

Last week, 101-year-old Virgil Coffman became the oldest owner of a 2010 Chevy Camaro.  He purchased his new muscle car from Miles Chevrolet in Decatur, Illionois.  To put this in perspective, Virgil was nearly 60-years-old when the Camaro was first introduced for the 1967 model year.

You wouldn’t know it, though.  He doesn’t look 101-years-old.  He doesn’t act 100-years-old.  He doesn’t groan and complain when he drops down into the low driver’s seat of his new Camaro.

Virgil likes fast cars, and the 2010 Camaro that he purchased is plenty fast.  The car he purchased was, of course, the SS model, which effortlessly spills out 400-hp and 420-lb-ft of torque.

We all know the story of the 2010 Camaro—how it returned to the scene after an eight year hiatus, how it was redesigned to look like an ultra-modern version of the ’69 model, how it has been racking up accolades in magazines and on-line, and how it is one of the hottest  cars on the planet.

The Camaro was also featured in the movies Transformers, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  In the movie, it was known as “Bumblebee”, and it could change into a robot and defend the planet.  Virgil’s Camaro may not be able to change into a robot, but does have the $995 Transformers Special Edition package, which includes Autobot (Autobots are the good guys in the Transformers movie) logos on the fenders and wheels, an Autobot logo embroidered into the center console, and special Transformers stripes and doorsill plates.

Although Virgil’s new Camaro is a modern car decked-out with an appearance package from a modern movie, there is one thing about this car that is still old-fashioned—the way he paid for it.  In a time when the credit crunch is keeping people away from dealerships, Virgil paid cash for his new car.

He was able to do that with his nest egg from working at General Motors for 25 years.  He’s definitely a GM man, having owned some 40 cars in his lifetime; 16 of them Cadillacs.  He traded a red, late model V8 Monte Carlo SS in to buy this Camaro.

The video below shows Virgil driving and pontificating about his new purchase.  I think you’ll agree that he comes across as being quite spry for his age.  Below the video is a slideshow featuring the Transformers Edition Camaro, as well as a few other detail shots of the 2010 Camaro.
