BEIJING – A day after blocking Twitter and other websites, China apparently cut access to Facebook on Tuesday evening local time (2:13 pm GMT Tuesday).
The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that Internet service was disrupted in Xinjiang Province to prevent coordination amongst protesters in this western China city. However, users from across the country are being affected by the outages. Xinhua reported that government officials did not say when the service would be restored.
In addition to Facebook and Twitter, other websites that are being disrupted include Blogspot, Wordpress and Youtube. Flickr and Wikipedia are being partially blocked.

I dont think who evers desision it was to block this site has thought at how this is really effecting people, and that it is a very wise decision to put it back on.. really.. my family will is going to be so worried, I am supposed to write everyday, and due to lack of payment I have no phone to call on either, PLEASE somebody do SOMETHING about this, I speak on behalf of many people who need this. Come on China this is our only means of communicating with our families back home and please don't take that away from us...please don't take long...women ai ni Zhongguo, and please once again don't take face book away from us!!!

I WANT FACEBOOK BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In China, there are so many things are fake, now, the Internet will more and more fake. Maybe XIU SHUI street will open one "INTERNET" for China! ZEN ME BAN? HEN KE LIAN!
this really really sucks.
and its so not fair! im in shanghai and i'm getting facebook notifications from people in hk. I still don't get why they have to do this!!
DAMN,I WANT FACEBOOK BACK,MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And another big website blocked. Google just a week ago due to allegedly showing porn links. No information when Facebook will be back. The biggest internet user base in the world. Just shut off. For the greater good of the country... right?
I've been in China for almost three years. I could be in Iran and don't feel any difference when using Internet. This censorship is actually getting worse and not just affecting a particular website, but the internet connection as a whole. I am seriously considering leaving this country because doing online business here is too difficult.
What saddens me is that Chinese netizens seem to accept this in general. Why is that?
what are some good proxy sites
those f*cktards. i am visiting in guangzhou for a month and now i cant keep in touch w. my friends back in chicago!! blahh. all cuz the government is gay and dont want ppl to see the truth.
I tried a lot of proxys. Most won't let you login at all. www.netinvader.com would let me login (after verifying my birthdate to facebook), but only if I tick the "remove scripts" checkbox. But then since Facebook relies heavily on javascript/ajax on most of their buttons, that means I could still only navigate to 30% on the site and not post updates or messages...
Anyone else have a good, free proxy?
I am in Kunming.I feel so bad.. Why a big country would feel unsecured on a social website? If 911 even happened in China, I guess China will block the whole Internet. My business website is blocked back in 2007 'cause it shared IP with other sites, when the IP was blocked,my site was blocked too, I had to pay extra $30 to fix it. Gosh,I hope I can head back to my hometown Vancouver asap.. I hate living here, simply HATE!
Sorry, that should be www.netevader.com
I'm serious!! I live in China, and I am sooooo mad!!! :@ at those chickens... But go on ebuddy.com and click the option facebook chat ;) hope that helps...
CANT WAIT TO GO BACK!
Chinese gov. really does suck, they block the sites which are my best love.I can see the reality in the world from those webs.I can learn English and the truth rather than trust bulshxt CCTV,there is no freedom of speech there, they just follow communist blindly!!!Communist, what a pussy mother fxxker, BBC,CNN,Facebook, what.s next?I loathe my gov.,as well as my passport which is fxxking useless when you are abroad!!!
this is outrageous!!! If by blocking facebook can save the country, then just cut it off of the internet then china will be safe. moron act!
Install Vidalia and you can use the internet without restrictions on any site. Free!
www.torproject.org
(this site is blocked by China, so use a proxy to get the program to install it)

Because most Mainlanders do virtually NOTHING online in English, just .cn Chinese sites. So, they don't notice anything is missing at all. Baidu and 163.com, etc. work just fine so they have no idea about it. How can you miss what you don't care/know about?
Unbelievable. Just arrived in this country and the bastards block my only tool to regularly keep in contact with friends. Ridiculous!
Okay yeah I want facebook back too, but you guys need to calm down. Learn to communicate other ways. I'm not for this censorship thing and blocking it, it's definitely not cool, but you guys need to chill. You're complaining about a site being blocked. There are so many more things that are wrong with the goernment, complain about that. The fact that you're crying and whining about facebook is laughable. QQ.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Facebook is one of the most remarkable communication tools i have come across, that being said, i see how China decided to go ahead and block it. I however feel that they're going a little overboard with barring such websites as mentioned earlier by someone else- Chinese people have little to do with foreign sites and it therefore makes little difference to the country itself for barring such a site. I'm fed up with China blocking EVERYTHING. This issue seriously makes my blood boil. I NEED access to facebook. The internet is supposed to be free. Not constantly blocked and censored this way. You might as well not have the internet, you bloody commies!
I am going through withdrawal. I have to stay up at odds hours to call my family now. I can't upload the wonderful pictures I took in Beijing. The thing that really makes me mad is the sites they choose to block. They blocked my company's (a large commercial bank) HR site so I couldn't even look at my paycheck to budget before payday. They keep blocking the sites of the company I am interning for here (a global logistics) preventing me from doing proper research for my paper I need to complete for graduation. People are finding other ways to communicate so it is pointless to block those who wish to use Facebook solely as a social networking site. China...Find other ways to control your population please and thank you!

Sure. A big part of the online community use Chinese sites only and they have popular, local versions of Facebook and Youtube at hand. But there is also a large part of Chinese who prefer Google before Baidu, that have all their Western friends on Facebook, who use Gmail or other Google-services not available at Google.cn. And they hate this blockade as much as I do.
Thanks for the tip about Torproject. Gave me a reason to finally install it. Works great.
wonderful. now the only entertainment i have is watching lost/prison break/gossip girl off tudou& video sina...but better than nothing right?
why don't you guys just leave China? cannot leave because you can buy cheap things here live cheap here or some benefit. Just curious.
I think China does not care your leaving, JUST BUY AIR TICKET AND LEAVE CHINA TOMORROW
To tt, yo! look man,i don't think those people mean it that way! but let's be honest here, internet does play an important role in our everyday life!and facebook is very helpful to some people, well, apparently not you.i guess u probably never used facebook before,so maybe u shud jz chilled! AND,WE WANT FACEBOOK BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear China - This isn't going to help you enter the world market. Actually it makes you look stupid and backwards! Sure hope things will settle down here and facebook, youtube, blogger, twitter, and more will open up soon! I'm so tired of one site after another being blocked.
Alex, if facebook is so important to you, you will leave China for certain. You dont leave, as facebook is not that important, compared to staying in China. Just leave.
tt: some of us can't get up and leave. me? i'm a student. i can't leave until my predetermined stay in shanghai ends. in the meantime, i'd like to stay in touch with my friends in the states. is that really that hard to understand?
