This Saturday you can catch Prom 66: Berliner Philharmoniker on BBC Radio 3 at 11:30 AM Portland time. This concert is of course part of possibly the greatest classical concert series in the world known as BBC Proms. The festival's an eight week series of daily classical music concerts in Britain (primarily in London's Royal Albert Hall, though) that has been going strong since 1895.
This particular concert on Saturday will feature the superstars of the Second Viennese School: Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. The term Second Viennese School is simply how people in the English speaking world refer to a group of composers who were living in Vienna back in the early 20th century.
Here's what the program looks like:
Wagner Parsifal – Prelude (Act 1) (13 mins)
R. Strauss Four Last Songs (22 mins)
interval
Schoenberg Five Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 16 - 1909 version (16 mins)
Webern Six Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 6 (12 mins)
Berg Three Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 6 (21 mins)
Karita Mattila soprano
Berliner Philharmoniker
Sir Simon Rattle conductor
It should be a wonderfully hypnotic program. And remember, you can catch it live on BBC Radio 3.
