Kimbo Slice has established himself as a top street fighter, a less than impressive mixed martial artist, and so far, an able boxer. Recently there has been some buzz about a possible "street fight" betwen Kimbo and Roy Jones Jr. While this might be nothing more than a publicity stunt to generate some much needed exposure or a glimpse of something to come, one has to ask--what makes Kimbo thinks he deserves to be in the same ring as a skilled pro fighter like Jones Jr?
Now anybody can "Google" the former internet sensation and watch him lay out one fighter after a next with his heavy hands. But at the same time, anybody who knows anything about professional fighting understands the major difference between a back yard fist thrower against a skilled fighter.
Kimbo's street KO's were against unskilled fighters that aren't good enough to hold Roy Jones Jr.'s jock strap. What happened in MMA? He was laid out by a soft pawing jab from Seth Petruzzelli; and now, he has made the trip inside the squared circle three times, coming out undefeated at 2-0 with 2 KO's.
Talks about Kimbo and Bobby Gunn fighting a BKB fight have been going on for years, only for Kimbo's team to never come through. At one point he was offered $400,000 to fight Gunn and yet it never happened.
Talk is easy, and until Kimbo does fight a high caliber opponent he won't be taken seriously as a professional fighter.
Through the internet Kimbo has been made to look like one of the baddest fighters out there; his boxing promoter is going to keep lining him up with tomato cans so he can walk right through them and continue to look unstoppable. But he has shown nothing to give any indication that he belongs in the ring with a top tier opponent like Jones Jr. or Gunn.
As a fight fan I'd love to see Roy or Kimbo come over to BKB and take a shot at reigning World Heavyweight BKB champion Bobby Gunn...but do I think it will happen? Nope. BKB is a different breed of fighters, and Gunn stands alone, atop of both of them when it comes to ungloved boxing.
A fight with Bobby Gunn means a KO loss for Kimbo, which means the ultimate end to his pony ride of a fight career. And that's something his promoters won't let happen to their cash cow.
Now a gloved boxing match between Bobby Gunn and Roy Jones Jr...let's get it on boys!
