Woman's pit bull finds lost elderly woman in New Jersey

On Thursday night, a pit bull named "Creature," heard something in the woods behind her Piscataway, N.J., home.

According to NJ.com, that something was an elderly woman who was the subject of an intense search effort by local officials.

For hours, authorities and rescuers had been searching the area for 89-year-old Carmen Mitchell, who had disappeared from her home earlier in the day.

Thanks to Creature's keen ears and desire to alert her owner to the person in the woods, the barefoot, mud-covered woman was discovered, lying on the ground not far from Cara Jones' home.

After Mitchell's discovery, rescuers flocked to the scene and whisked the woman to a hospital.

According to Jones, few people recognized that it was her alert dog who actually found the elderly woman.

Knowing that pit bulls seldom receive good press, Jones wanted to be sure that her dog's good deed was acknowledged, stating:

“Pit bulls never get any recognition for doing something good,”

“Here’s a chance to say something good about a pit bull.”
