A woman has been arrested in the deadly shooting of a college student following a road rage incident that happened early Friday morning in Kennesaw.
Ms. Lindsey Sparkles Lashayla, 22, of Austell, has been charged with aggravated assault and murder, according to Cobb County police.
She was being held Saturday at the Cobb County jail, jail records show.
Ms. Lashayla is accused of shooting Ms. Kim Kilgore, 21, with a handgun in the parking lot at the Shiloh Green Apartments off Shiloh Road, police spokesman Officer Mike Bowman said.
Ms. Kilgore was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where she later died, he said.
The incident involved two carloads of females and an altercation started near the gate to the apartment complex, Sgt. Dana Pierce said, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“There was a whole lot going on out there,” Sgt. Pierce said. “You have two carloads or groups of people who are at one another.”
At some point, the road rage turned into a physical altercation outside of the vehicles, police said.
“A gun was ultimately produced after the physical altercation and a female was shot,” Officer Bowman said.
Ms. Kilgore was shot just inside the gates of the apartments near Kennesaw.
She was studying communications at Kennesaw State University, where she was a former member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the AJC reported.
The sorority issued a statement on Twitter Friday about the Paulding County High School graduate: “Our prayers go out to our dear friend Kim Kilgore!”
The university also issued a statement, expressing condolences and announcing that it was preparing to offer grief counseling for those who knew Ms. Kilgore.
It’s unclear if the suspect and Ms. Kilgore knew each other. And police have not said what prompted the road rage.
