There is no doubting the success League of Legends has garnered in the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) genre of games. But if you’re strictly a console gamer, like me, you’ve probably never even heard of the MOBA genre because it’s usually only available on the PC platform. Awesomenauts attempts to change this pattern. Ronimo’s second game, Awesomenauts is a MOBA that works beautifully on consoles and it demands every gamer’s attention, especially if you’re a PlayStation Plus member.
Awesomenauts or the MOBA genre can be compared to a chaotic form of chess. Every move, attack, purchase, and choice can alter the status of battle significantly. Awesomenauts pits three players against each other; each team trying to destroy the others base. Six characters come with the game, all with about 24 unique abilities to help reach that goal. The characters’ abilities range from defense maneuvers, to devastating attacks and currency (Solar) mining powers. After every game that is played, the player gains XP which will then unlock new abilities or new characters; win a game and the player will gain even more XP as bonus.
What makes Awesomenauts so addicting is witnessing each battle unfold in front of you and knowing that you played a large hand in the outcome. Upgrade the wrong power up and you very well could derail your teams’ chance of success. Battles can last from five minutes or an hour but the round is not over until one team wins. The community is already rallying behind Awesomenauts and promised DLC characters should be on the way soon.
MOBA games are not new to gaming. League of Legends and DOTA have been thriving on the PC scene for some time now. But Awesomenauts is the fist MOBA game that works beautifully on console. If you are a PlayStation Plus member, you can grab Awesomenauts free of charge. That’s right…at no coast at all. If you’ve never experienced a MOBA game before, because you’re not into PC gaming, do yourself a favor and play Awesomenauts. There is nothing to loose if you’re a PlayStation Plus member. If Awesomenauts continues to gain attention on the console, hopefully more developers will take notice and take risks with the MOBA genre, just like Ronimo did. I will say this though; Awesomenauts is my favorite downloadable title so far this year.
